And it was so infancy where no one really even knew what it stood for, Evan.
And now it's named Image and Likeness.
But back in 2018, 2019, you really started to hear the word NIL everywhere.
But it really started to gain traction when the state of California passed the Fair Pay to Play Act.
And they were the first state to essentially say that young athletes, student athletes can get paid for NIL.
And then after that, the domino effect started to happen where you had other states, Georgia, Texas, Louisiana, passing similar bills.
And from that moment, it got us to where we are today, really.
And last year, the biggest domino fell, which was the settlement of
which allowed college athletic departments to share revenue with their student athletes up to $20.5 million the first year with a 4% increase annual on that number.
And so as you can imagine, college athletic departments didn't budget that in.
And so now you have a $20.5
million expense line item that's increasing by 4% every year.
And we all know if you want to be competitive, that's the minimum you can spend or you want to spend, but they didn't have the revenue to offset that.
And so it's really changed the business model of college athletics.
And the business model was somewhat fractured even before this came out and before NIL, before rev sharing.
And most people think of NIL and rev sharing as the same thing, but they're two different things actually.
So a student athlete can get paid on their NIL, that's their name, image, and likeness.
Think of that as marketing deals.
Correct.
Let's just say, for example, you'll have an athlete that plays at said university where they are promoting a brand Adidas, Nike, Dr. Pepper.
