And so uh that gets to become a big task very quickly.
So having two of every page becomes a problem.
Similarly, having uh redirects for every old page that you've ever created and then three oh one redirecting, that was Google's recommendation for years.
They would say don't let things four oh four, you need to redirect it and then they were like, wait a minute, like this is years and years of redirects.
Why don't we let people four oh four stuff if it's you know
Not gonna be used again.
So yeah, the the size of the index matters and what a lot of SEOs don't realize is that everything every time a page is added to the front of the index, something falls off the back.
And with the web getting infinitely bigger and bigger, and especially now with potential for AI bots to create even more infinite content, there's this huge risk that the web will become unmanageable in terms of rankings.
And we may already be at that point, right?
There's just so much content and so much new content being created every day that expecting Google to
show new content, but at the same time evaluate it and and be rigorous about um what gets to rank and what doesn't and when.
That's a really big expectation and it's growing as the web grows.
And and then trying to machine learn all of it and get it showing up in the right countries, uh despite language differences or, you know, any other differences, all of that gets harder as the corpus gets
bigger.
And so Google needs ways to either, you know, in the case of mobile, consolidate one and say, okay, I know this page is the same as this page, even though they have separate URLs, or use something like a responsive design to just have one URL that does a lot of things or that does multiple things.
all of that becomes more important.
But also just, you know, I end up talking a lot with people about keeping uh the URL structure and rendering clean because like things like variations in how a URL is rendered or how a URL is linked to or whatever, that can be a confusing signal for Google and Google says they're great at it, but I don't believe it.
I've seen when they're not.
And so, you know, having the URLs that you have in your site map match up with the URLs in your canonical tags, match up with the URLs in your internal links, all of that saves Google processing power from having to say, Oh, this is a duplicate, this is a duplicate, I've already got this and like to consolidate those or ignore them or, you know, bring all the SEO value into the main URL.
Like all of that takes effort and energy and is a potential place where things can get confusing and all of that makes crawling and indexing more complicated.
