I'm not sure how much of it is genetic or not, but what we can say is that if you think about the individual, they're going to be born into an environment, or at least growing up in an environment where
they haven't really had their needs met.
Um often, you know, we like to think of it in terms of sometimes even attachment theory.
And in attachment theory you think about the ways that people attach to others.
And there's always kind of this uh ability to have this insecure attachment when we're young, where if people are not around or if people walk away, then we ha are very insecure in and of our
ourselves and so we might have this fear of intimacy or we might have this inability to work on our own self-esteem.
I guess that's comes in an environment where we haven't had those needs met or our needs met and we haven't had people that are able to look after our own needs.
So it just means that um we don't know how to do that for ourselves.
Uh, absolutely.
I think, you know, we look at our parents and we learn from our parents at a young age in ways that are just so remarkable and we don't even realise them.
And I think if we have a parent that's a narcissist, we can sometimes work so hard not to be them.
And inevitably end up being like them because we work so hard not to be like them.
It's just amazing because we're trying so hard to be different, we actually end up being the same.
And so I think by having a parent that's a narcissist, we often can take on some of their behaviours without even realising.
Well, I think I think firstly I want to recognise that by asking that question you're already on the right track and already you're you've got more insight than I'd say that someone with narcissistic personality disorder has.
Um and so you're kind of you're going on the right in the right way.
And and I'm a psychologist, you know, in many ways I'm in the business of hope and I believe that every human being, regardless of what they bring into a therapy room, has that capacity to change.
So if you're asking the question
you're starting the right way and you have to be motivated, I guess.
Um one of the things that um can really help with this kind of work is actually having that insight and that often only comes when an narcissist is hit sort of rock bottom.
