When do we do something we can't take back?
What am I actually afraid of when I fear what I might do?
Yeah, so she was a case that I came across when I was researching the book and I was looking for people who had stories of PMDD.
So she was a bartender in London in the 1980s and one night walking home with, as the legal documents put it, a fellow barmaid.
Oh, yeah.
She had an erratic outburst and she stabbed this woman to death.
for seemingly no reason.
And she was obviously tried and they found her guilty, but her sentence was diminished because of premenstrual tension was what it was called at the time.
And I found this case really interesting, partly because I really wanted to understand what had happened.
Like I understand that people can be really unwell and that we want to have
their sentences recognise the distress that they're in.
But I couldn't quite grapple with the fact that that no reason was just sitting on the page, like that she did this for no reason.
And so I really wanted to explore her story and try to understand what it looks like to be a woman who commits a crime for no reason.
and get to the bottom of what might have actually happened.
I never could get those answers, not in the wholeness of what I wanted to, but I became really fascinated with women who have committed crimes while they're in this luteal state, maybe partly because I was worried that I would do something horrible too.
how close am I to tipping over yeah and I was like I was researching this Sandy Craddock and Christine English for like a year just trying to find this information and I became like really obsessed with that oh my goodness it meant that when I was doing the final proofread of this book I had like 20 references that were all titled PMDD and the legal defense the legal defense for PMDD the pre-menstrual defense and I was like I've really fucked myself

How am I going to sort which one is related to which thing now?
I have to read them all over again.
Oh, my God, yes, because there's so many.
