I guess what the science says is that the idea that great conversation requires some sort of social gift or natural charisma is frankly not backed up by the evidence at all.

I think we can all tell this, like we see the polarisation, and the data shows that people across the political spectrum actually share far more common ground than they actually think.

Because we've stopped having real conversations with people who maybe see things differently to us, our assumptions about each other have calcified.

For example, a Pew Research study from 2023 found that political polarisation in the US has nearly doubled since the 1990s, with the sharpest increase coming not from people's actual policy views shifting, but from their unwillingness to engage with the other side at all.

Research from the Harvard Human Flourishing Program found that loneliness and social disconnection are now at record levels globally, with nearly one in three adults reporting that they have no one to talk to about the things that really matter to them.

I think just that all of this paints a pretty direct picture of a society who doesn't know how to talk to each other anymore on the opportunities and everyday level, but also all the way through to the human level.
