without having surgery but in victoria for example you would need to have a gender affirming surgery which you know is is what we call bottom surgery or whatever so and that would apply to both um assigned female at birth and assigned male at birth right so we would like to think that possibly in victoria that law will change maybe in the next session of government um but until then it's that that's a prerequisite for changing the marker
You can though change, I'm pretty sure you can change them on your passport though, or you can go X on your passport, again, without surgery.
uh look when you are sort of um going to you know try and sort of really make that first sort of steps i think into transitioning there are these elements these medical elements like hormones for example and you know you're going to get told by the doctor there are irreversible sort of changes that will occur you know loss of fertility is a common one obviously physical changes depending on whether we're talking going mask or going fem but
There will be things that are going to change.
And, you know, those are going to be pretty difficult to turn back if that's not what you want.
So, you know, the doctors and even the counselors will be kind of pointing this stuff out to you.
So that's the first thing.
It's like, are you really sure that you want to do this?
I think beyond that sort of aspect, the whole coming out process, telling people that you're trans or whatever, you're going to find a way, a language to express your identity, but you're going to be kind of pointing out in some ways that you're different.
And there may be a price to that, or a cost to that.
And it might be, as Charlie said, the risk of losing family relationships, the risk of losing intimate relationships, the risk of losing friends.
And for some people it goes further, the risk of losing your job.
You know, the risk of being almost run out of town if you live in the wrong part of town.
I mean, it can, you know, you're going to potentially become a target for discrimination, marginalization.
So again, it's really important to understand and prepare for some of those things because, you know, it does happen.
I mean, as much as I would like to say,
everything will be fine, you're going to want to walk down the street, you're going to want to go to the supermarket, you want to go to the movies and things like that and you don't want to be harassed but there are risks that you will be and you need to develop and work with your counsellor and with all your support groups and friends to build up that strength and resilience in yourself if you need to.
to understand that, yes, you are valid, absolutely.
And just because somebody else might be suggesting otherwise, that's not true.
We have to work, I think, with everybody, again, as an individual and in terms of what do they think they want this journey to look like?
