And probably at some point in your life, it was really useful.
Like you needed that.
But basically, whenever you're
your window of tolerance or the stress kind of goes above a certain threshold, your system will likely employ one of those protection mechanisms.
And...
Yeah, and it feels like it's shitty at the time.
But I think the first step is often just having compassion that these protective mechanisms that we have aren't necessarily bad or wrong, but they're just things that we learned that are maybe now maladaptive to some degree.
Yeah.
So with that as context, I think of...
the process of nervous system mastery or reducing the half-life of reactivity is kind of how I frame it because I don't think that we can ever completely...
remove reactivity from my life like be an absolute monk unless you want yeah unless you're like fully enlightened and awakened and i i've yet to meet someone who falls into that category no i'm nowhere near now so i feel like yeah i i think like reducing the the goalposts to okay how can i shorten this half-life of reactivity from you know maybe like a few days or a few weeks or for some people months to just a couple of hours or even like eventually a few minutes
And that has a huge downstream impact on your relationships, on your life, on how you feel.
And so the skills or the toolkit to reduce the half-life of reactivity, there's really three skills that are kind of part of it.
The first is somatic awareness, interceptive awareness, noticing the sensations that you have in your body, as well as the story, for reasons that I mentioned earlier.
I like to think of this as almost being like a chef of your own inner sensations.
And in the same way that if you go to a culinary school, you can refine your palate, I think we can learn to refine our interoceptive palate, where we can learn to associate, oh, if I have like a kind of contraction in my chest or some heat here, that that is associated with anxiety or anger, or almost like learn to map our bodies.
and use that as additional data and feedback that our bodies are giving us.
Instead of just waiting for like the 10 out of 10 panic attack to hit and then be like, I didn't see it coming.
Yeah, it makes so much sense.
It makes so much sense.
