One frame that I have on this is as emotional debt that I think we all have to a greater or lesser degree.
And it's actually really helpful that we have the ability to buffer our emotional response for somewhere down the line.
Because there are certain contexts, let's say you're in a business meeting, where if you're feeling an intense emotion, it's probably helpful not to express that in the moment.
Yeah, it's actually a pretty useful skill.
But at the same time, if that debt accumulates, especially over a long period of time, then it causes more fragility in the nervous system through what's known as allostatic load, is the technical term.
And what typically happens, especially in...
high achieving kind of type A folks, is I think about it, or I call it the feather brick dump truck, where your body will kind of send you signals of like, hello, like we have this thing to address.
And initially it'll feel like a feather.
It'll just be quite subtle.
And then,
Maybe it's like a hives breakout, something like that.
It's like your body is having a physical reaction to be like, hey, pay attention to me.
And for some people, some of whom I work with, it's not until some kind of intense dump truck situation hits where they may be unable to keep going the way that they are until they address some of these buffered stress responses.
The hospital is a terrible environment to give birth.
The first time you experience it and your body starts shaking, you're like, what the hell is going on?
It's completely insane, isn't it?
Yeah.
I mean, I think about it as emotional hygiene and especially as a new dad where there's like more intensity than usual.
Every couple of weekends, I try and set aside a couple of hours to just feel my feelings.
Sometimes it's breathwork helps me get in.
