You know, I wondered like, well, who am I if I'm not a violinist?
That has been my primary identity.
My entire remembered experience, you know, like for as long as I can remember, this was me.
My right shoulder to this day is slightly elevated compared to my left because of all the hours I spent practicing in this position.
And when I would go to an airport and I didn't have the strap of my violin case, you know, fixed to my shoulder, I think, oh, my God, I'm missing something.
Where's my instrument?
Like that was my relationship with the violin.
Right.
And so one piece of advice that I would give to your listeners to to future proof themselves from the risk of change or to.
navigate a current change with a little bit more um stability right because we talked about feeling whole on the other side of change is to define your identity not simply by what you do but by why you do that thing so when i asked myself about the violin well what did you love about the violin maya i realized oh well if you strip away all the superficial features of actually playing a musical instrument
At its heart, I love human connection.
I love connecting with my musical peers.
I love being on a stage and performing in front of people and seeing them light up with some recognition because they feel something, maybe something that they've never felt before, if I'm lucky, if I was able to touch them in that way.
And that was really what made me so passionate about music is that it was a vehicle for...
emotionally connecting with other people.
And just because I lost the ability to play the violin didn't mean that I lost what made me love it in the first place.
And so when you define yourself based on your why, when I say, oh, I, Maya, am the type of person who loves human connection,
then the thought experiment simply becomes, OK, well, how else can you find a way to express that part of yourself?
Through what other outlets can you express a desire for human connection?
And it turns out, subconsciously, I've done that.
