As a cognitive scientist, I study the science of human connection
through my podcast, A Slight Change of Plans, it's all been about forging deep emotional connections with people right off the bat, right?
I get to cut through all the pleasantries and we just go straight to the hardest moment of their life.
Or in writing The Other Side of Change, that was all about these deep, meaningful connections between me and the person I was interviewing and forging those bonds.
And so I would ask people to wonder, what is their why?
What makes them light up?
What makes them love the things they love?
Maybe that's service.
Maybe that's showing their empathy.
Maybe that's improving at a skill.
Maybe that is being really curious or having an outlet for expressing their creativity.
It can be anything under the sun.
But when you define yourself by your why, you're giving yourself a soft landing when life makes other plans because nothing can take away your why.
It's still there.
It's on offer.
You still feel whole.
And then you just ask yourself, okay, I can't express it through this means, but are there other means that I can express it through?
Yeah, I think as a society, we're trained from the time we're little with the question, what do you want to be when you grow up?
It's all about your role and your label and your profession.
We're not asking people who they want to be when they grow up.
