The reality is that you do try hard at the beginning.
I mean, it's the same way that you go after a job.
You put on your best outfit and you make sure your resume doesn't have any typos and you do the work.
You get it and you go for it and you show up on time and you do the whole thing.
And then once you get the job, you loosen your tie a little bit
And you can relax a bit and you start to become more familiar.
And it's the same thing in a relationship.
I mean, this is the thing that brings people in is that it's so easy at the beginning to work on the friendship and to build affection for one another and to prove that you've got my attention.
But then once I've gotten it, particularly once we're in and the system starts to move and maybe we have kids and we definitely have jobs and mortgages and whatever else,
it's easy to relax the relational energy.
Yes, you got to wake that back up and you have to do it with small things, which I hope is good news because you don't have to do massive, major overhaul things all the time to keep the relationship going.
It's literally maybe as simple as
eye contact or saying good morning or making sure to ask a question at the end of the day.
Little things do go a long way for sustainability.
But the other thing is I've been married almost 30 years.
I don't want to have a crush on my wife.
That's not the thing I'm going for right now.
I want to have an intimate, deeply connected, mutually edifying relationship with my wife.
I think we need to recognize that there's a kind of a time and a place for everything.
One of the things that we're learning right now is how to choose who are we going to be right now?
