Why does the typical “wake up earlier” advice fail for busy moms?

Tamara 0:00
You've heard it before. Just wake up earlier, Mom, and you'll have so much extra time to get things done. 5 AM Club, everyone. Some influencer with no kids or has a nanny or a partner who does 50% of the mental load is telling you that the secret to having your life put together is setting an alarm for 445 every morning. And listen, if the 5 a.m. Club works for you, I'm not here to take your membership away. But for most moms that I work with, that advice isn't a morning routine. It's a guilt trip. And today we're gonna break down why waking up earlier is one of the most damaging pieces of productivity advice out there. And I'm gonna give you a way to replace that with something that actually works because it gives you the flexibility to fit your life inside it instead of it demanding your life to bend to fit it.

Hello my friends and welcome back to another episode of the Balance It Method podcast. I'm your host, Tamara, and if you're new around here, welcome my friend. This is the place where us working moms are coming together to talk about all the things that we have on our to-do list, and we're gonna figure out ways that we can get them done with less stress and less overwhelm so that we can check them off the list and have some time to relax or some free time to spend with the people. people that we're doing all the things for. Now I know today's topic is going to hit home for a lot of people and there's probably going to be some very strong opinions either agreeing with what I'm saying or completely disagreeing with what I'm saying.

Because typically the standard advice for how to fit everything into a day for a busy mom who's got work and kids and extracurricular activities and a social life and all sorts of things going on that she's juggling throughout the day. Typically the advice we hear is just get up earlier. Then you have more hours in the day, right? It kind of logistically makes sense. You have more time if you get up earlier to start doing things. And so we try that. We try the 5 a.m. club thing where you have to get up and like work out really hard for 20 minutes or something like that.

What are the hidden costs of trying a 5 a.m. morning routine?

Tamara 2:48
And it it's literally actually the 5 a.m. club is like 20 minutes of working out and then 20 minutes of um mental health building and 20 minutes of something else, emotional health building, something like that, which i that's beneficial, but who in their right mind, it has that amount of time. Even if you do get up at five A.M., what time do your kids get up? Quite honestly. Because I do not even if I got up at five AM, I would not have sixty minutes to spend on a routine for myself. And that's really the number one reason why this advice fails for working moms, because it's ta it's not taking into account the fact that you might get interrupted during that time. You might have not slept the night before because you have a sick kid, or maybe you have really little kids who are still waking up for feedings in the nights.
Tamara 3:42
Or maybe you have, you know, a little one that has nightmares or something that wakes up in the night. Or just you're at that time in your life where sleep is really hard and three AM comes around and you're wide awake laying in your bed. And what are you supposed to do then? Are you supposed to get up at three AM? Cause let me tell you, I've tried that. And by nine AM I'm exhausted and I still have to go to work. The other problem that I have with this get up earlier and be productive thing is yes, you may be able to get a bunch of stuff done, but what you're missing is that time for yourself because you're gonna spend the entire day still doing shit for other people.
