Dave, there was five years of club control left on Christopher's original contract. How did this process begin and why did the club decide to do this now when you really didn't have to? Well, we didn't, but the way we looked, when we looked into the future, and we talked a lot about it over the winter time and talked with John Middleton and also a special thanks to John Middleton because anytime this gets done, John is behind it, is that we kind of assumed years four and five were no-brainer as far as we were going to pick those up. So we couldn't even imagine a scenario in which we wouldn't. so now we start talking beyond that and we thought with somebody of christopher stature that'll continue to pitch that we'd rather get this done now while he's still at the age that makes sense for us so that really was it we just again when we looked at that was a given so we were building on that and for oh when chris sits back down
And for Chris, what does it say about the club's commitment to you that they did rework or redo a deal that they did not have to do?
. He's so proud of being here and it shows the commitment that this team have and the reward of my work and the way I've been doing the last few years of my work and it's just a great commitment and he appreciates the team doing this for him.

Christopher, you just saw a Ranger play out his contract and sign a big deal in Boston. Was that ever in your mind or was security more important than you, was security more important than gambling for you?
Yeah, he saw the contract, but he only worried about himself and the things that he can control. He's very well aware of the things that go around, but it's just like the security was a very important thing for him.
Was it important to kind of get this locked down before Thursday opening day? Yes I to me I you try to keep distractions to a minimum once you get opening day of course pitchers starting opening day so that would we wouldn't want that to be going on but I also think that anytime we try to do this we try to get it done before opening day. Did any possible labor unrest in the future influence you to do this now?
He doesn't think so. You know, there were communication from both parties, you know, a while ago, and he said it didn't have nothing to do with the labor or anything.
Chris, Christopher, when you think back to maybe where you were four years ago in spring training and now where you are today, second for NL Cy Young last year, opening day starter, you got this new contract.
Does anything kind of come to mind about, I guess, your journey to this point? Yeah, it's truly fantastic, you know, and I couldn't imagine this and all the discipline and the talent that I have, they have come out. Everybody has get to see it, but he's very proud of the organization, the organization to do this for him.
