Hey, thanks for listening to another great DIY money podcast. We're going to take a break from our normal Q&A. I had an awesome opportunity to sit down with Megan Featherstone of Featherstone Nutrition. And we talked about how she grew her business from a side hustle to a genuine going concern. This is a podcast you are going to love and enjoy. Here is Megan. Welcome, Megan, to the DIY Money Podcast. This is not your normal shindig at all, right? This is not. It's usually a running podcast, a nutrition podcast.
Megan Featherstone 0:51
So, you know, we're really spinning this.
Unknown 0:53
Well, thank you for that term. I don't know if that's a positive or not, but I will say that when I've learned more about you, In my time with you as a client, full disclosure, I'm a client of yours, and it's been a great endeavor thus far, but learning about your journey and your business, and I thought, what better way to share with our listeners someone who took what was a profession or a career and a passion into really a booming business, by all accounts, at least it looks like that. Yeah. I mean, for those that don't know you, because again, this is a new audience for you, our podcast listeners that are primarily personal finance. For those that don't know you at all, introduce yourself a little bit, tell them what your platform is, what you do, and then I'll dissect and ask some questions.
Megan Featherstone 1:42
Absolutely. So my name is Megan Featherston, and I'm a sports dietitian. I started my career in a hospital like most dietitians did here 15 years ago. I was told that there was no market to become a sports dietitian, that I could never make a living going down that realm, even though I was very intrigued by that profession in grad school when I took a sports nutrition class. So I went the traditional route and I worked in a hospital. Both my parents worked in a hospital. So that seemed like comfortable and normal to me and interesting. But as I started to do that, I realized that my passion for nutrition didn't translate to sick people in the hospital. Right. That's just not the place to be educating people, motivating people.
Megan Featherstone 2:20
And I started running while I was in my first year as a clinical dietitian. And I realized I didn't know so much about sports nutrition. And I was screwing so many things up. And I was like, okay, with my background in nutrition, if I don't know how to do this, no one is doing this appropriately. So I kind of dug myself into the research and kind of used myself as a guinea pig as I started running more marathons. And started a side business while I was still in the hospital. And that side business slowly took off over a couple years. At that point, I had one small kid.

How did Megan Featherstone transition from hospital dietitian to sports nutrition entrepreneur?

Megan Featherstone 2:55
So I was just thinking of this as some extra income. And then when I had my second daughter is when things kind of really started to get serious with it. I built this business on the side when I was on maternity leave, which two kids under two plus building a business and not sleeping. It was an interesting time. And I questioned why I was doing it at all times. But looking back on it, I'm so thankful that I decided to do that. And then At that point, I was making, you know, right before COVID hit, I was making just as much money in my side business as I was at the hospital. But there was just a security with health insurance and all those pieces. And I am not a risk taker, which we can dive into if you want to.
Megan Featherstone 3:32
Like I am, you know, I'll go watch people gamble, but it's my money. I'm hanging on to it. So I waited until the pandemic hit and my business continued to grow and continue to thrive before I was like, OK, this can be my full time career now. I can pull the plug on my day job and go all in on this business. I didn't have a whole lot of support, to be honest. People in my family were kind of like, what are you doing? Like, you know, so I was kind of blind to trying to figure out how to make this work.
