Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen.
Allie Howard 0:14
You're listening to another edition of DIY Money. DIY Money. I would. Quint, our beef is squashed, so now I need an update on the running. You're not limping today. That's encouraging.
Quint (host) 0:26
Ironically, I should be because I was doing interval work this morning, and with four and a half weeks to go on my last interval, I felt... Uh, the hamstrings start to strain. I did not strain it and I abruptly stopped. I have learned that the hard way. So I got through about 90% of the workout. It was a very difficult workout. It felt really good. It was hard. Uh, but I felt that and I was like, no. And so I finished, I walked, I mean, I walked, uh, iced it today. Hopefully, and I know, I think it'll be just fine, but I'm four and a half weeks out on rest when's your taper start so it'll start two weeks out from that so i have two peak weeks right now and then um yeah and then like a half anyways it'll two to three weeks is that a thing that everyone knows or is that just something i've learned from running and hearing you talk about running
Quint (host) 1:23
Explain taper to the audience. you know, what you do in a given day manifests as fitness, something like three or four weeks out. So there's a certain point where you're not building any new fitness before your event. And in fact, you could be hindering yourself from, you know, fatigue or whatnot. So it's pretty simple concept in that, you know, you peak multiple weeks before, the event, and then you, you tail off. You don't sit around or you'll, you know, you're not going to atrophy, but that's not good either. So, you know, we'll go through a pretty significant reduction in mileage and certainly work, maybe introduce a new day off or whatnot. What's fascinating, they have this, this area, this thing called taper tantrums.
Quint (host) 2:24
And when your body is used to running, you And then you start to taper and runners out there, you'll, you'll get a kick out of this. You'll know exactly what I'm, what I'm saying. Number one, you'll start to hurt in unique places. Like you have never hurt before and your body's like cool for whatever reason. Maybe you've had a subtle thing and now your blood is flowing to that area. But I mean, And last time I was like, what is happening in my left big toe? Like, why is my left big toe hurt?
Allie Howard 2:52
I mean, it was like, I couldn't walk.
Quint (host) 2:54
I get up in the morning and I couldn't walk. I was like, what is wrong? And then it's like, oh my gosh, my ankle. What is wrong with my ankle? And so your body just starts, it's so funny. It's hysterical. And that happens to everybody. And then you start to get this anxious, like almost energy, like you really want, you know, to go out hard at some point. And so what you're trying to do is scientifically sort of kind of hold back, hold back, hold back. If you think of a horse in the gate, hold back, hold back, hold back. And then on race day, it's like, boom, go.
Allie Howard 3:22
And your body's like, I can run again. And you leave. Yeah.
Quint (host) 3:24
And you let it all out there. But yeah, so I'll have a two to three week taper.
Allie Howard 3:29
Taper tantrum.
Quint (host) 3:30
And I'll go through taper tantrum. Yep.

What personal updates and running/taper stories do the hosts share?

Quint (host) 3:32
I'll go through taper tantrum. And then the race is April 12th.
Unknown 3:35
You got all your equipment, Dad? Sweatbands, check. Anti-chafing nipple tape, check, check.
Quint (host) 3:39
The work has been put in. I mean, I still have a couple more weeks, but it's all now about weather and making sure that I stay healthy. That's it. And then I should, knock on wood, if those two things are good, I should go out and I should be able to do what I'm trying to do.
Allie Howard 3:55
It's like the idea when you're studying for an exam. The night before, like, I'm talking a big exam, not like cramming in college. The night before, you just say, okay, if I don't know it by now, I'm going to bed, sleep, get in a good night's sleep.
Quint (host) 4:08
That's right.
Allie Howard 4:09
Yeah.
Quint (host) 4:09
Okay, there you go. And the last thing I'll say on this is... Is the sleep is so important leading up to it, but I will sleep terrible the night before.
