Why does being the “good girl” keep me stuck in anxiety and people‑pleasing?

Devoney Kodad 0:00
Why we should release that. Three reasons to release that. And instead start being the weird girl. Okay, so number one. Here's the deal: is that God created you with very specific personality traits. He created you with specific gifts, specific talents, specific strengths that are intentionally placed within you to be able to do what you are here to do, to be able to create the life that you are here to create, build what you're here to build. And when we are trying to be the good girl who has it all together, who is on it, who is kind, gentle, soft, warm, never rocks the boat, doesn't attract too much attention. When we are that girl, we are actually filtering the gifts, the strengths that God gave you.

Devoney Kodad 1:46
We are absolutely filtering those things. And here's the thing I want to really differentiate between being a kind person. Right, between being kind, being intentional, being loving, being caring, that is very different than trying to be the good girl. Right? The good girl, it's an image, it's a facade of I wanna make it look like I have everything together. I wanna make it look like I know what I'm doing, I have it all together. I don't rock the boat at all, I'm very agreeable. I you know maybe there's some people pleasing in there. And I share this all from a deep space of that was absolutely my experience. That was absolutely my experience growing up for a very long time and God intentionally placed gifts, strengths, characteristics within you.
Devoney Kodad 2:41
And when we are watering things down, when we are filtering, right? When you are filtering your true personality, your true strengths, your true gifts, when you are filtering those things to come off as a good, you know, good, I've got it all together, girl, you're actually. Filtering what God gave you and how He gifted you. Okay, so that is number one.

How does pretending to have it all together block my authentic, “weird” self?

Devoney Kodad 3:06
It is filtering literally what God gifted you with, the strengths that you have and who you are here to be. Number two, it is not authentic. It is not authentic. What is more authentic is being kind, being loving, being warm, being weird, being funny, being goofy. Whatever those things are for you, for me, I had to fully release Trying to seem like I had it all together. It was absolutely a facade, an image. I wanted people to think that, you know, I was really agreeable and very nice and all of these things. It was totally image-based and was genuinely not authentic. I am genuinely a very kind, warm, right? A lot of those things, but there was absolutely a level of It's different when that's who you are versus that's how you're trying to come across or look to other people, right?
Devoney Kodad 4:01
And that's gonna create barriers to authentically connecting with other people. So it's not like you're listening to this because you want to show up authentically in your life. You wanna show up feeling unfiltered, free, authentic, genuine. Like you just wanna be yourself. That's why you're here. That's why. why you're listening to this and When we are focused on putting off this image of I have it together, I'm the good girl, right? The got it all together girl, like that is not creating authenticity for you. That's not letting you authentically move through the world as yourself. Which then is going to keep you from creating deeper, more authentic connections. Like what you want, right? And again, if you are listening to this podcast, I can absolutely imagine that you want genuine friendships in your life.
Devoney Kodad 4:58
You do not want surface level, you do not want shallow, you want very genuine, like soul level, authentic, kind, loving connections.
