Why does the host start the episode with a midday walk and how does it set the tone for talking about rest?
hey love welcome to the podcast so glad that you are here i'm out on my midday walk which is just so energizing if i could suggest anything as like a midday pick-me-up my two daily go-tos i'm not even gonna lie to you about it it's an energy drink and a midday walk that's like dreamiest midday break for me So I'm out here, the wind, just like a nice soft breeze. There's like freshly cut grass everywhere on this trail that I'm on. It's just a literal dream. Okay, what we're talking about today, this is a theme that has come up in multiple conversations that I've had, is this idea of And I am struggling to rest. Like I feel like I need to be productive all the time or I want to rest. But when I go to do that, I'm thinking about all the things I should be doing.
And so I first off just want a name. This is very natural. The culture that we live in, the culture that we live in literally is so focused on productivity, everything being productive, everything having a purpose, everything being optimized, doing more, being more, being better, right? And my gosh it's just it's not the design it's not the natural design it is not that is not how we were built to live we were not built to live in a way where we are constantly creating output where we are constantly being productive doing things optimizing things that is just not it like if we look in the bible can we just take a minute and be so real right now literally in Genesis in Genesis like what did God do after he created he created and then he rested he created he took time and then if we look more through the New Testament like how often did Jesus literally separate himself
Go off and spend time alone in prayer, in meditation, alone time, quiet time to be with God, to be in prayer, to be in reflection, to be with himself. Like that is a constant theme throughout the Bible. is this idea of rest this idea of there is phenomenal and amazing output productivity creation service ministry all of these things and there is rest there is quiet there is stillness and And we like we just we live in such a culture that is just like, oh, if you're not being productive, you're freaking wasting your time. You have to use all of your time officially. And don't even don't even get me wrong. I am like I have so much energy. I'm constantly going. I'm very active. I have so much energy. I have ADHD.
Like I have so much energy. So I'm with it. OK, I'm with it. And, and there has to be some form of rest. There has to be, or else we're going to burn out.
What biblical examples illustrate that even God and Jesus prioritized rest?
Right? And how is that helpful to what God has you here to do? How is that helpful for the mission? or your calling, your purpose, how is that helpful if you're burnt out, right? And then what happens when you're burnt out? Cranky, tired, not wanting to do anything, right? And I'll be so honest, there are periods where... Hi. There are periods where... if i do not give myself enough rest every few months like i'll notice this if i am not getting enough rest i will randomly in air quotes get sick but really what that means is my body acts as if i am sick like i have a flu or something and i'll have to lay on the couch non-stop literally i'll have enough capacity to work but outside of work i'm literally i'm in my pajamas i am on the couch for a couple of days a couple of days
So we were not meant to live in this way where it is constant output. We were not built for that. And if we really need to think about like, how is rest serving us? Why is rest necessary? And you get to decide that there are certain people where they need help. You know, hours and hours and hours. There are other people where they just need like 30 minutes, 30 minute cat nap, or they need to make sure they're getting eight hours sleep or right. And this really cool concept, I actually don't know who created it, but it's, it's this concept of there being seven types of rest. And it's this idea that rest doesn't mean you're not doing anything like it, but it could be a lot of different things. So the seven types of rest, there's like physical rest, mental rest, emotional rest, sensory rest.
