Hey, hey friend, welcome to the podcast. So glad that you're here. Today, I'm gonna be sharing with you a shift, just this nugget, this insight, this shift that I had when I was learning about the nervous system that. Just completely changed how I view anxious moments, overwhelmed moments, and I'm really hoping you'll find it helpful. So If I look back on my journey with anxiety And growing my confidence, feeling more confident in myself. There are a couple of really big moments that stand out. So I was going through grad school, had decided that I wanted to become a therapist. Realized at that point, this is in my early mid-twenties, that I had anxiety. I had no idea up until this point. Realized that I had anxiety.
Devoney Kodad 2:06
I'm like, oh, okay. So start to kind of move through that and you know, start to explore therapy, like getting in therapy, finding a therapist, and I'm in grad school learning all of these amazing tools. tools, learning all of these amazing approaches and things about psychology and the brain. And going through social work specifically, there's also a very big focus on, you know, community and systems and Just all the things that I'm obsessed with and could talk about for days. But I'm learning all of these amazing tools about the mind. I'm learning so much about psychology. And

How did realizing she had anxiety in grad school change her perspective?

Devoney Kodad 2:49
So many things are clicking for me about why I'm experiencing anxiety, what's actually going on for me, why this has come up for me in life, how far it traces back. I'm just learning so much. And Then I started moving through one of the highest anxiety periods of my life, like the most anxious that I had ever been. that I could possibly remember back to and I started realizing like, okay I I don't feel equipped for this. I don't have enough tools. I've been trying the like challenging my anxiety. I've been trying to talk it out with my people and it just didn't feel like enough. So at this point. I then started exploring, bringing my faith into what I was doing. So exploring more of, and I had just, you know, had been feeling convicted to like dive deeper into my faith.
Devoney Kodad 3:52
So I started exploring what God says about my mind, about who I am, about How much he cares about me, how loved I am, how cared for I am, right? I just really started diving deep into these spiritual truths. Capital T truths of who I am, what God has for me, um, that he's renewing my mind daily, right? That I'm receiving grace every day. all of these things that I can set all of my burdens down, right? And So I I start exploring this and this felt huge. This started to shift so much for me. It was this deeper layer of healing that I wasn't feeling before. And then over time, over the next couple years, I started learning more about the nervous system. Because I was still kind of at a point where I'm like, my body just feels so anxious in these moments.
Devoney Kodad 4:55
There's so much energy just coursing through my body. I feel anxious. And sometimes these mind tools, the mental health tools up in my brain. aren't feeling like enough. Like my body just still feels on edge, really stressed, really high energy, and I'm not really sure what to do with that. I don't know why.

Why did integrating faith with mental health become a turning point?

Devoney Kodad 5:15
And so I started to explore more of these somatic, body based, nervous system based practices, learning about all of that.
