Why does asking “Do I want to do this?” keep me stuck?

Devoney Kodad 0:00
Hey friend, how are you? Welcome to the podcast. Okay, so the other morning I got up at it's like six AM and I did not want to go to the gym at all. In any way. I didn't wanna do it, okay? But I had told my friend that I was gonna go, that I was gonna meet her. And so this is the question that I ask myself. Instead of asking, do I want to go to the gym? Do I want to work out right now?

How can the question “What will help me show up as my best self today?” guide my decisions?

Devoney Kodad 0:29
I asked myself this question instead, and I want to share with you why this is so helpful. I asked myself, what is going to help me feel my best today? So what choice right now is going to help me show up my best and feel my best for the rest of my day? And here's why I love this question is because in some moments, like there are just so many women that I have conversations with. And they're like, well, when do I know how to rest? When do I know when to push myself? And that's why I love this question, because In some moments it could be I need another hour of sleep. However, in some moments, and for me, it was

What’s the difference between honoring emotions and letting them drive my choices?

Devoney Kodad 1:14
I know that working out, getting my energy moving, is going to help me feel the absolute best for the rest of my day. Okay. versus the question that I used to ask myself, which is, do I want to work out? Okay, here's why I'm not asking myself that question anymore. Do I want to do this versus what choice right now is going to help me feel my best? for the rest of the day to show up my best for the rest of the day. Okay? So with the approach that I take with like life, with therapy, with coaching, just in general, how I show up in life, it's very rooted in Um, this approach called acceptance and commitment training.

How does Acceptance and Commitment Training (ACT) connect values to everyday actions?

Devoney Kodad 1:58
It's very centered around values. Knowing Who you want to be, knowing how you want to show up. What are your priorities in life? What do you want to look at your life and say, oh my gosh, my life is full of A, B, and C. Right. So it could be well being, connection, community, honesty, authenticity, confidence, like, you know, uh, bravery, courage. Right. It could be so many different things.

What practical steps can I take to identify my core values and priorities?

Devoney Kodad 2:27
And this is something that I love, love, love guiding my clients through, especially in the new season reset that I just started offering. Which is a one time call where we get crazy clear on what your values are for this next chapter you're walking into. Why this question is so helpful is because it is keeping you centered on what your actual values are, what is important to you. Not just in this fleeting moment, what feels good. In this fleeting moment, what do I want to do? It's What is going to help me show up? As my best self in my best energy today, right? You're zooming out of the momentary because our minds in the moment.

How do small daily decisions shape the person I become over time?

Devoney Kodad 3:10
If your mind is anything like mine, it's so good at convincing me to not do the thing that's actually helpful, the thing that's actually healthy, the thing that's actually in line with what I want, who I want to be. it will easily convince me out of those things instead of the thing that actually is going to help me long term be the type of woman and show up for the life that I want to have and how I want to show up for my life. So instead of what do I wanna do right here, asking myself which choice is going to help me show up as my best self today and my best energy, most effectively, most joyful, like just what is gonna help me show up as my best self for the rest of the day.
