What is breath prayer and why combine it with Bible reading?
Hey, hey love, welcome to the podcast. So glad that you are here. Oh, I'm so excited to talk to you about breath prayers today. I'm so excited. They have been huge for me and I share them regularly with clients and I'm just so excited to share them with you today. So A practice that I've been experimenting with lately always just I I feel like I'm just constantly experimenting. That's just an approach that I have to life. Everything is an experiment. I'm gonna try something. See how it goes, re-evaluate, readjust, right? That's just my approach to life. We don't have to have it all figured out. I don't have to know what's gonna work. I'm just gonna experiment and see how it goes. So lately I've been playing with when do I wanna get my time in the word?
When does that feel like it works into my day well and I really have some time to contemplate? And so recently what I've been playing with is reading my Bible before bed. So laying down in bed and then reading the word a little bit. And I went through a faith-based, Christ-centered yoga teacher training. Oh my goodness. Two years ago, three years ago? Holy Toledo's. That's crazy. Yes, I think it was 2023. Holy, oh, that's crazy. Almost three years ago. And it was one of the absolute best things of my life. Living Soul Institute.
How did the Living Soul Institute training shape the breath‑prayer practice?
If you have any interest, please go check out Living Soul Institute. Yeah. Phenomenal. So something that I deeply loved about that program is that it integrated, right, yoga, mindfulness, breath work, right? All of these things around the nervous system and the body along with faith. Which for me was just huge, huge. That's been a huge piece of my journey. And so one of the things that we practiced in there was what's called a breath prayer. And how I've been exploring this recently is at night I've been spending some time in the Word and just reading through And then what I do personally is I choose one verse. One verse that really speaks to me. Out of however much I read, I choose one verse. And I lock in on that and then I repeat it multiple times in my mind.
And just really let myself simmer on it. Hey friend, welcome to the Free Mill Podcast. If you're tired of feeling anxious and all the overthinking, if you're ready to feel more calm and confident to start trying new things and being more of your true authentic self. This is the podcast for you. My name is Devani. I'm an anxiety therapist, confidence coach, and yoga teacher. I'm here to help you use faith, yoga, and mental wellness to create daily healthy habits, start feeling more confident in your own skin, and creating your best life. Grab your iced coffee in your journal. Let's go!
And the reason why I do this is because I think it's super easy for us to read a chapter in the Bible. And then to just walk away and move on with our lives. For me, choosing a specific verse to really lock in on, and then I kind of turn it into a little mantra for myself to come back to throughout the day. Right? For me, having something practical that I can walk away with and take with me so that I can really integrate whatever it is that I'm receiving from God, whatever it is. From the Bible that's standing out to me, I want to be able to integrate it into how I'm living, into how I'm showing up, right? So I read a chapter or however much I have I have the you know the time and the space for and whatever is feeling like it's calling to me, sometimes it's less than that.
And then I pick a verse or even a chunk, just a little phrase from that verse that is speaking to me the most. And then I just let that sit with me. I repeat it over and over again in my mind. And this is where breath prayer comes in, okay? So if you are someone who has ever tried to do breathing practices or things like that, you are going to love this. So I just kind of popped open my Bible. I prayed for a moment and then I popped up in my Bible to see what God wanted to share with us today. So what I opened to was Matthew five, where are we at? Matthew five, fourteen and fifteen. Okay, so those verses, I'm just gonna read them here.
