Hey friend, welcome to the Brainwell Podcast. Are you ready to feel more peace and more confidence? Are you ready to stop second guessing and overthinking so you can be more outgoing, say yes to the adventures and put yourself out there more? Well you are in the right place. My name is Devani. I'm a therapist, a faith-based yoga teacher, and a dog mom. And I remember being right where you are. Everything changed for me when I started blending mental health, faith, and the nervous system. In every episode, I'm going to share with you nuggets from my experiences in the mental health field and my own raw and perfect real life lessons to help you feel more calm, rewire your brain, and own who you are so that you can start being who God created you to be unapologetically.

Hey love, welcome to the Free Mole podcast. I'm so glad you're here. What we're gonna be talking about today is a couple of reasons why your mind might be having a hard time slowing down and getting quiet. And this is kind of a hot take, so you can take what feels supportive, leave what doesn't. But I'm someone who I have a pretty crunchy holistic view on life, on well-being, on health, on what it means to. Create a life that feels really genuine and fulfilling to you and it can be kind of countercultural and not in line with the mainstream. So here we go. Number one, reason why your mind might be having a hard time slowing down. We live in a culture that fosters overconsumption.

Why does constant media consumption make it hard for the mind to slow down?

Devoney Kodad 2:25
So we live in a culture where it is completely normalized to be consuming content all the time. Whether that is you are listening to music, you are listening to a podcast, you are learning something, you're watching YouTube, you are listening, right? There is this norm, this accepted norm in our culture to always be consuming. And if we zoom out, you know, our culture even struggles with that in regards to like Amazon and shopping and capitalism and right, like there's these much bigger pieces that are at play as well and ways that our culture lives this out. But what we're talking about right now is there is a possible link possible link between if you are consuming content all of the time podcasts music tv there is just something on constantly
Devoney Kodad 3:26
That could be a reason why your mind is having a hard time slowing down. Because, and this is the metaphor that I use with clients, if your mind is used to you having the gas pedal on at 80 miles an hour all day, every day. If you all of a sudden let off the gas. You tap the brakes because you're like, Ooh, I just need a moment. I need some quiet. I need some stillness here. That is gonna feel a little unsettling. And it could be really difficult. At least for me, I will speak, I'll speak on that. We're like if I am used to going 80 miles an hour, listening to stuff, learning even if it's good intentions, right? But I'm just consuming content all the time and then all of a sudden I let off the gas and I want some quiet, that can feel really unsettling for me.

Dysregulating, I can feel a little uncomfortable with it, and then my mind just kind of starts to race or it keeps racing because it doesn't No

How does our culture’s focus on external stimulation disconnect us from ourselves and God?

Devoney Kodad 4:25
how to just be in the quiet. It doesn't know how to just do that anymore because it is so used to consuming all the time and having some type of sensory input all the time. So number one, reason why your mind might be having a hard time slowing down. We live in a culture that fosters over consumption. Number two, again, this is this is where the hot take is gonna come in. We live in a culture that completely encourages us to live disconnected from ourselves and disconnected from God. Yeah, I'm just gonna say it. We live in a world that is encouraging us at all times to be in the world. to be listening, to be learning, to be just hyper fixated on what's going on in the world, the challenges, the struggles, the right all of the things.
Devoney Kodad 5:19
And there is absolutely, you know, benefits to being involved and aware. Obviously that's not what I'm saying. But Just this idea that we actually, I believe, live in a culture that completely encourages us to be disconnected from ourself.
