So we had two provincial finals upcoming this Sunday, Munster and Connacht. We had extra time dramatics last weekend. And then in between, we had the draw for the All-Ireland Football Championship, which has thrown up some stellar games, not least Kerry Donegal on the 23rd of May. And then recording today, Thursday, the Ranker is starting. As people realise, GAA Plus are very much taking the best of those games, including Kerry Tunny Goals. What are the upcoming provincial finals in GAA football?
Hello. So this All-Ireland Football Championship draw is, first of all, very juicy. I think a lot of people are still wrapping their heads around the format. Juicy and complicated.
Your average fan. It's actually quite common in a lot of counties. If you've had this in your own county, it's very easy to get your head around, but maybe a lot of counties haven't had it as well. I need to chat GBT.
I was like, can you simulate, what does this look like? And so the very simple version is these eight games. If you win two games in a row, you're in a quarterfinal. That part's easy. You lose your first, you have to win your next two. And then you make a quarterfinal. You have three chances to win two games. Correct. To get to a quarterfinal. Yeah. You can either win your first and win your second. You can win your first, lose your second, win your third. Or you can lose your first and you have to win the next two. So... Kerry Donegal obviously jumps out Dublin Loud pretty interesting Cork against me jumps out Monaghan Mayo is a very interesting game Roscommon Tyrone not to mention the others but I mentioned the GAA plus point just to almost note the shift in broadcasting maybe
So, GA+, RTE sold their 50% stake last year. There was a conflict of interest. And so now this is like GA+, as the GA's broadcasting wing, I think, kind of upping things. They've launched, you know, analysis shows on YouTube. They've upped their offering generally. And I guess we've gone from a point where, you know, RTE can't show all the games, this gets more games on, with a sprinkling of some nice monster hurling, to now really... Well, they're dominating this juicy part of the season. So or do you still have a lot of the provincials and we'll show the provincial finals and that's kind of down to legislation as much as anything. But the reality is Kerry Donegal is a bigger game than Kerry Cork.
And it just is. Albeit there's no trophy. It's just a bigger game. More people will go out of their way to try and see it. And so you take this knockout run, the first round of the All-Ireland Football Championship, GAA Plus have the first two picks, both weekends across round one, the first two picks, or do you have the third pick? And so that means obviously the weekend of Saturday 23rd, Kerry Donegal at three o'clock is GAA Plus. Cork Mead at half five is GA plus and then RTE get third pick they've picked Galway Cladair that evening and the next day Roscommon Tyrone will be on GA plus so that's the case that weekend the following weekend the following weekend the following weekend right the way through GA plus now have all of the best football games that everybody will want to see so you go from that Kerry Donegal on the 23rd of May right through until the Saturday of the quarterfinal weekend GA plus of the first two quarterfinals
and then RTE of the second two on the Sunday, and then semi-final and final, that's the preserve of RTE. But I'd put it to you, Colm, this is, you know, Munster Hurling has been a bit unhappy of late with GA+, but this is like GA+, saying, the GAA saying, really, actually, we kind of, we're not just superfluous anymore, we are now absolutely essential if you want to watch the football championship.
