1979, that was a big moment for me. 84 was big to me. I'm Sam Jay. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. With our friends, fellow comedians, and favorite authors. Like Mark Lamont Hill on the 80s. 84 was a wild year. I don't think there's a more important year for black people.

Chapter 2: What were the key highlights of the Pistons vs. Magic game?
Maxie, Cade. These are must-win games. You know, I have to lead the team. So we'll see what happens. Yeah, I mean, I wasn't thinking about Scottie Barnes at all. That's all I think about.
Scottie was definitely better in game two in terms of pushing the ball. Otherwise, their offense doesn't exist. They are kind of like the business where they have to push the ball more. He ain't like Cade at the same time. I thought Cade was just... whatever the adjective was you want to use in this game, he was sexy. I mean, the way he was getting into the lane.
Not necessarily every single one of his buckets, but the way he was setting guys up. I mean, he was going through two magic players. Here comes a third and then dropping it to Duren or whatever he needed to do to up everybody else's scoring point level. He was just drawing so much attention and quick Duncan or whatever he needed to do. They kept showing the in and out dribble on the broadcast.
Richard Jefferson was loving it. It was on top of his shoestrings. He kept on saying it was right on top of his shoelaces. It was dirty. It was really, really nice. It was dirty.
And tough finish too. That was great. A lot of shoestrings talk. But you're right, Skeets. I mean, Scotty Barnes or not, like Cade came out trying to control the game. And usually he will get people involved for three quarters and try and take over in the fourth quarter. And he came out and he said, I'm taking over in the fourth quarter. That's my point. That's my point.
I'm hoping we see that as a Raptors fan from Scotty Barnes tonight. The level of guys, these superstar guys, you got to do it. In the postseason, you just have to. You can't wait every single time.
Don't forget about Brandon. Brandon Ingram also has to perform big time.
I hope he hits some shots, but it's Scotty I want to really see lead the team. Anyway. Yeah. I have concerns, though. I have concerns. Eleven points last night. You said he was better, kind of. Four of ten from the field. He was only finishing plays. He can't create plays right now. Had four assists, three turnovers. He was trying to be more aggressive, but the face-up game, it's just not working.
Like he can't move Wendell Carter Jr. And he doesn't look quick enough to get by Wendell Carter Jr., which is kind of surprising as well. So, you know, they were able to get away with it last night because the Magic were so bad on the offensive end. But I would like to see some more from Durin for sure. And they tried to make it so he would do more this game. And it just didn't.

Chapter 3: How did Jalen Williams' injury impact the Thunder's game?
This is a place for raw, unfiltered conversations with some of your favorite athletes, creators, and voices that not only deserve to be heard, but celebrated. One week, I'll take you behind the scenes of the biggest moments in sports and entertainment. And the next, we'll talk about life, mental health, purpose, and even music. The Clifford Show isn't just a podcast.
It's a space for honest conversations, stories that don't always get told, and for people who are chasing something bigger. So if you've ever supported me or you're just chasing down a dream, this is right where you need to be. Listen to The Clifford Show on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
And for more behind the scenes, follow at Clifford and at TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok. Do you remember when Diana Ross double-tapped Lil' Kim's boobs at the VMAs? Or when Kanye said that George Bush didn't like black people? I know what you're thinking. What the hell does George Bush got to do with Lil' Kim? Well, you can find out on the Look Back At It podcast.
I'm Sam J. And I'm Alex English. Each episode, we pick a year, unpack what went down, and try to make sense of how we survived it. Including a recent episode with Mark Lamont Hill waxing all about crack in the 80s. To be clear, 84 was big to me, not just because of crack.
Yeah.
I'm down to talk about crack all day, but just so y'all know. I mean, at this point, Mark, this is the second episode where we've discussed crack. So I'm starting to see that there's a through line. We also have eggs on the table right now. Thank you for finishing that sentence. Yes. I don't think there's a more important year for black people. Really? Yeah.
For me, it's one of the most important years for black people in American history. Listen to Look Back at It on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to my new podcast, Learn the Hard Way with me, your host, and your favorite therapist, Keir Gaines.
And in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm bringing over a decade of my own experience in the mental health field and conversations with so many incredible guests. I'm talking Tripp Fontaine, Ryan Clark. Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing... We get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. And we're still chasing it.
And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross. Because you find it important to be a good person while you're here on Earth? Or are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust.

Chapter 4: What are the implications of Keldon Johnson winning Sixth Man of the Year?
Maybe he's got to go to arbitration. Yeah, he only played 58.
I mean, this is the thing. There was a lot of guys that got votes, right? I said a lot of them. But, you know, A.J. Mitchell got some. Reed Shepard got some. B. Stu, Mitchell Rumson, Io DeSumo, Mamu. I know Bill voted him third, I heard, for the wraps there. Dylan Harper.
I said when we were debating this award a couple weeks ago, I was like, is Keldon Johnson even the best player coming off the bench for the Spurs? I don't know. And Jamal Shedd. Somebody voted Jamal Shedd. Got one vote. I didn't know you got a vote. Me? I definitely wasn't giving it to Jamal Shedd or Mamu for that matter. Mamu. What a vote, man. That's three votes.
That's a weird crop of six-man candidates for sure. It is. It's strange not to have like... you know, a more explosive score off the bench. I guess Nasri did get one and he wasn't putting up like 20 a game or anything, but yeah, strange. Anyway, congratulations, Kelton Johnson. Hope he gets another llama. You think he'll buy a celebratory llama? Why not? Treat yourself. Exactly.
Chapter 5: What are the Hornets' realistic expectations for next season?
All right, let's take a break and then we're going to hit the beach. Right now, new FanDuel customers can bet $5. I'm holding up a five. And you can get 250 in bonus bets if your first bet wins. That's right. Turn five bucks into 250 in bonus bets just for getting started. How did your prop bets play out last night?
You had Jalen Green over, didn't you? He didn't do it. He had 21 points.
I thought he went down to 20.
Yeah, he didn't do it. He had 19 points.
Oh, I thought he had 20.
Unless I'm mistaken.
Oh, I think he got there, buddy. He's over 20. Yeah, man. Yeah, he was 21. 21 points.
Oh, he got the bucket. I didn't notice. But I didn't. I must have hit three of four because I had Jalen Durant hit 10 rebounds. Only got nine. Tough. Yeah. Tough, tough, tough.

I said it backwards.
It's you got the nuts, I got the chocolate. I said you got the chocolate, I got the nuts. Which is also true. I thought you were just remixing. Yeah, remix. I saw no problem with that. It's like a mashup, like a Gatorade mashup. Tom Poro says it's good. I believe Tommy Poro. That man knows Gatorade. I don't know why I know that, but he does. He's deep in the beverage game.
Nobody loves bevvies more than Tommy. Wow.

Chapter 7: What unique Subway Takes do the hosts share?
I'm a bit of a bevy man myself, so this is interesting.
Got to get Tommy on the show.
Yeah, all right.
I think I spent half an hour just in the bevy's aisle yesterday.
Just wandering around, looking at bevies.
I can go to the other side of the aisle. Bevy's there, too.
Where are you shopping for bevies?
I was at a Whole Foods yesterday for lunch. So hot bar, hot bar, salad bar, cold bar, soup bar.
Imagine a Whole Foods at a swim up bar. They would do it. I can see him doing that. Imagine Cam Stewart at a Whole Foods swim up bar. That I can't imagine. And the meat parlay is happening.
