Why am I here other than the fact that I enjoy being here with you? When I'm given the opportunity, Brendan Escott's joining us, and welcome to the show. Order's coming off a tough one last night. Losing to the Minnesota Wilds, who are a very, very good hockey team. You know, I was just taking a look, Brendan, at the fact that you look at it's gonna be tough to get out of that central division. You got the Winnipeg Jets, you know, you got the Dallas Stars, the Colorado Avalanche. It's uh it's gonna be tough. Minnesota actually might fly a little bit under the radar, but they're off to a pretty solid start.
I don't know how much you can fly under the radar when people like me are talking about 'em.
It's fair to say it's a long, long season, but they are right there in the top three teams in the league, and I think we got a good example as to why. And that was against their backup goaltender last night, no less. Forget about what um oh man, Frederick Gustafson has been doing for now. It was Marc Andre Fleury recovering from the gaff of all gaffes and uh helping his team overcome that. And that's what they've been doing this year.
You know, the thing that impressed me the most about them last night was the fact okay, so you know, in the opening minute we have the big gaff, the uh the bouncer, obviously hit something in the ice. Mark Andre Fleury caught flat footed. He just didn't play it very well. But he's he's got a unique style about him, right? Not only on and off the ice, but uh I w I'm thinking, hey, there's a gift for the oilers to get things rolling a little bit. And then about a minute and a half later The Wild tie it up. It's offside, but just barely. And it goes against them. Oilers maintain the one nothing lead, and I'm thinking another thing in favor of the Edmonton Oilers. It didn't phase the Wild at all. In fact, I thought from that point forward, I thought Minnesota actually carried the play the rest of the hockey game.
They they just didn't let anything phase them last night. And um I was very, very impressed with the way they played.
Yeah, they're proving that they've got well, we know they're kind of a it's a grimy team beyond a couple of players, isn't it? Like beyond K Kyril Kaprizov and and Matt Boldy, it's just a difficult team to play against. Up front on the back end, you know, and and obviously they've found some success in that right now. I thought this was gonna be a team plagued by dead cap, dead cap and salary cap space from Uh Ryan Souter and Zach Parisi, but instead you see them sitting again in the top three spots in the NHL through twenty games.
And they go to the front of the net. Everybody goes to the front of the net because that's where the debris is usually. It is uh it's kind of the it's the big deal. It's the really big game. Everybody talks about it. I know some people it's the only junior hockey game they go to all year, that one, right? Because they just love the atmosphere. And I always say, Well, why don't you Go to more because the they hey listen, the Western Hockey League is a great, great style of play. They play some great hockey. It's great for the family. You can take everybody reasonably priced. Anyway, it's coming up, so we'll be chatting with the Old Kings about that.
