Paul Coffey, Hall of Fame defenseman, is going to return back behind the bench. Coffey spent from November 13th to 2023 to the end of last regular season on the Oilers' staff. The regular season number 2.78 goals against per game was fifth best in the NHL.

Chris Knobloch, Oilers head coach, had this to say on Paul Coffey's return.
Well, I think he can offer a lot to our group. And right now, I think we need a little jolt, a little something to change the direction of where our team has been going. And I've got a lot of respect for Paul in my time working with him. I didn't know him before, but obviously I liked working with him and thought between the two of us and this coaching staff that we've had in the past, we've got the most out of the guys. And with him coming back, I think he'll give us that jolt, and I think he'll add some new perspectives. And, you know, I've been talking to Paul throughout the season, throughout the summer, and, you know, through stretches of good and bad throughout the year, and got his perspective on how he saw our team playing and what we needed to improve on.
You know, I just think with, like I said before, where our team is at right now, we're just kind of just okay. And we feel that we need a little something to just push us over, give us a little something. And, you know, I think Paul will add to that.
Meanwhile, Evan Bouchard, who leads all NHL defensemen in points, did not make Team Canada, the same Team Canada that has a combined total of seven points from the sixth defenseman, not named Kael McCarr, at the Olympics this year through the first four games. Evan Bouchard had this to say on how coffee will help him the most.
More so in the middle of the game. He sees the game, obviously, well from behind the bench. Yes, just hearing what he has to say is something you listen to, but I'd say definitely more in the game.
You know, one thing about Coffey is I think he's shown a ability to breed some offensive confidence in his players and have the D make plays.
Jake Wallman had this to say on Coffey's value behind the bench for the D. I guess I'll first start by saying, regardless of who is behind the bench coaching the D, the onus has got to be first on us and taking accountability, myself and all of us included.
