Hello and welcome to another episode of the Coy Gig podcast. My name is Scarlett Heron and today I am delighted to be joined by former Galway Gaelic footballer and international footballer Niamh Fahey. Niamh, thanks very much for joining us. Very welcome, Scarlett. How are things? All good, yeah. So today, Niamh's here with us speaking on behalf of the Ladies Gaelic Football Association's campaign for the love of our sport. The campaign celebrates the rich heritage and vibrant community spirit of Ladies Gaelic football across the country, calling on people of Ireland to get behind the TGKR All-Ireland Ladies Football Championships this summer. And to give these incredible athletes the support and backing they deserve.
So Niamh's been very kind to join us for an exclusive episode of the Coy Gig Pod, but to also speak about this campaign. So I suppose first off, Niamh, you obviously grew up as a dual sport athlete playing for Galway and then also... um playing your football as well so i suppose just to touch on the gaelic games first of all i know obviously your two brothers uh gary and richie if i'm correct have won other titles with galway as well so it's clear that gaelic football has played a massive part in your life growing up so if you could just give me a bit about how it has impacted your life and how what this campaign means to you yeah i suppose i've just been ingrained in the ga like i said since i was a young girl growing up in galway uh the youngest of of eight so
six older brothers and a sister as well so Gaelic football was always within touching distance and then yeah being the youngest I just followed my brothers everywhere when they were playing for the county up and down the length and breadth of every GA pitch in every corner of Ireland so just ingrained in me from a very young age and obviously loved the game loved the sport and lucky enough to have two brothers who played at the highest level as well and watched them lift Sam Maguire, which just was phenomenal at times, really great memories.
Deadly, yeah. And I suppose for yourself growing up, as I said, you were that dual athlete playing both Gaelic football and I suppose soccer or football, whatever you'd like to call it. What was that like? Because I think that's a common theme we see with girls in the country now is they're kind of split between a number of sports. Do you feel like that helps you in your footballing career going forward, just the different traits and I suppose attributes carrying over from sport to sport?
Definitely. I think I had a massive impact in my sporting career. I think, yeah, being a dual athlete or multi athlete gives you benefits of different sports. For example, like playing Gaelic, I was probably used to. bit more of like the physical contact, the rough and tumble. And I think I brought that into into soccer as well. And that helped me in that aspect. And then also basketball. I played that when I was younger and just the spatial awareness and development of different motor skills. I think that can all impact you in a positive way, really.
What is the 'For the Love of Our Sport' campaign about?
So I probably encourage us to play as many sports as possible when you're younger as well and try not to just focus on one if you can, because I think it is a massive help.
Yeah, and I think you said in an interview pre-World Cup, so this is going on three years at this stage, that if you ever were to move home at some stage, you'd love to go back and play with your home club. Have you ever got a chance? I know obviously you're still based in Liverpool with your new role, which we'll get onto, but have you got a chance since retiring to go back and to play at any stage?
