Off the balls football daily.
Hello and welcome along to Wednesday's Football Daily. I'm Phil Egan. Coming up today, Ireland boss Hamir Halgrumson admits it wasn't wise of him to take the spotlight away from the game against Kosovo with his comments on Israel. Dar O'Shea stresses that all his and the team's focus is on tomorrow night's game in Pristina, and Kevin Colban gives his thoughts on Seamus Coleman's absence for Ireland. But first, Hamer Halgramson was speaking to the media for the first time this week ahead of Ireland's Nations League game away to Kosovo tomorrow. The build-up's been dominated by the talk of the two games coming up against Israel, which take place in Hungary and Serbia. Halgromson said last week that his players were playing against Genocide rather than playing with them.
Comments at the Israel FA hit back at.
Yeah, um obviously we We're grateful for all the support we we have. Um create an um and taking over maybe the headlines at the moment what what I said last Last press meeting we had uh is taking the attention away from from maybe what's most important. Like you said, we are playing an important game against Kosovo. Um so that's was not not the purpose and maybe from uh leadership point of view not clever for me to To take the attention like this I need to be focused on the game. The players need to be focused on the game but To answer the question we are thankful for all the support we get. It's a it's a tricky time for us.
Darrell O'Shea will captain the team in the absence of Nathan Collins and the Ipswich defender says the players will meet collectively to talk about the game with Israel on Friday after the Kosovo game. He says all the focus for now is on the match in Prishtina.
Um we spoke already at the start of the week that we're gonna come together on Friday and discuss this as a group. Um Like I said, tomorrow we've got a game to focus on first of all. And I don't think we'd be doing our job properly if we didn't put our full focus into that game. But um yeah, once the game's over and Friday comes we're all gonna come together as one and discuss it um openly and yeah, come together. That that's the main thing.
Kosovo are new opponents for Ireland, but Heimer Halgamson has experience of going up against them before, and he says they'll be a stern test.
No, it's uh definitely going to be a a tough match for us. We we all know that we've We've analyzed them quite well, uh gone through that with the players, uh their strengths, which they have a lot of. Um And yeah, we w we would be glad to come here from with with with a drawing, half away game, first game of a tournament. Um obviously this all depends on how we play and the performance we will produce. I think the players are ready for this. Uh obviously
Why did Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrímsson say his media comments were a mistake?
Uh we need to be focused and switched on playing them and that's a a a tough task at at the moment. But I think when it comes to the game we will be fully focused and ready for for Taking on what's coming and and that's a good team. Just compare them. They they did even we thought we did well in the end of the World Cup group. They they did even better than us.
You can hear live an exclusive commentary of the game in Kosovo and off the ball and news talk on Thursday night. All the build up starts at seven. It kicks off at a quarter to eight. Stephen Doyle will be joined in the commentary box by Stewie Byrne. Seamus Coleman's another player that Ireland will have to deal without for this upcoming window. And on the football show last night, Kevin Colban joined Own Shahan to look ahead to the games both on and off the pitch, and he said Coleman's lack of game time. makes it very hard to be picked for the squad.
Seamus is a realist. He knows how difficult it would be from where he's been training, whether it's been back in Killy Beggs where he's been doing a lot of the summer, uh, whether it's been with Sheffield United where he's trained or or any other club where he's done his training.
