My name is Scarlett Heron and I am joined by Karen Duggan today. Uh we're gonna quickly go through the the latest squad announcement. Carla Ward has announced her squad for the upcoming playoff fixtures uh against Kazakhstan and we're gonna pre um review, sorry, the the FAI final and all of the WSL action from the weekend. So, Karen, a lot of news over the weekend, a lot of games How'd you find it?
Yeah, it's been been all go. I think all eyes were kind of on the squad announcement and looking forward to that um and seeing if Anthony knew was going to come of that and Um yeah, I suppose there was conversation about Ruesha's inclus inclusion, whether she would or wouldn't be included and who possibly would replace her. And I guess it is a big talking point that we have a brand new call-up in Sinéad Hopcroft. Um, you know, not someone who I'm overly familiar with, obviously hasn't come through the the uh uh Irish underage systems. So um obviously Crystal Palace fans and and WSL two fans and now WSL fans will will probably be aware of the name. But um yeah, I suppose it's it's a new name, so there's always a bit of a the surprise element that goes with that.
Yeah, I think so. And it it does seem like that sort of direct replacement for Ruesha, who's obviously still a fight of clubs, so that kind of ruled her out of contention. And then we have Heather Payne as well, who's who's back in the squad after a while out with injuries. So apart from that, it's kind of uh kind of just what you'd expect. I think the Sinead Hopcroft inclusion was the one that kind of stands out. I'm not sure there wasn't much talk about it beforehand. Um, I know we were discussing it in the in the group chat, there wasn't really any indication that there was going to be someone new coming in. Um I think she qualifies through her her Irish granny who is from Tubbercurry and Sligo. So it's an interesting one.
Obviously, we've seen it happen multiple times with, you know, players sort of switching allegiance later in their career. Obviously a very decorated player who as you said, is now playing at the highest level in England, which is the you know what we want, I suppose, coming into the squad to to add more add more firepower into that midfield. So um it's an interesting one. It's probably a good place for her to come into. Obviously they're gonna look at these these two games and they're must wins of course, but you would be hoping that it's also an opportunity to maybe see who else can knock on the door, maybe getting getting a starting place in the squad. So I think it's a great opportunity for her too.
Yeah, of course. I mean, we are expecting to win these games and if we're being honest, we'd be expecting to win them well. So you'd hope that that takes some of the pressure out of it that she'd be going into a confidence squad. You know, the results have really been going our way in recent times. Um And look, it it it always brings up the conversation about where the scouting is. Is the scouting more focused on

Like widening the pool to your like non-Irish born players or w and what questions does that ask of the player pathway? But I guess on the flip side of that, we really are benefiting from it in a big way with the likes of Eva Manion, Anna Pat and Caitlyn Hayes, who've maybe switched their allegiances a little bit later in their careers rather than at the underage and work their way through. So Should the questions be asked of where we are in terms of player pathway? Yes. But having a starting WSL player in the squad, is that going to possibly improve quality? Also, yes. Um, so I hope she goes in, I hope she she makes a stamp on it and and makes a big impact and
