Hello and welcome to a third year of The Yellow Eye Pod here on Off The Ball. Stephen Doyle back with you again and as ever joined by the two best pundits in the game, Gareth McLean and Vinnie Perth. Lads, brilliant to have you back and also... like at the start of what's going to be an amazing League of Ireland season, but the best place to get it all, of course, as ever, is on Off the Ball because we'll have so much discussion about the league right across the station, of course, on Saturday afternoon in the football chat. John Duggan always will cover the League of Ireland with the lads. between three and five on Off the Ball. We'll have the LOI pod for you every week and as well, LOI late night every Friday.
How did Shamrock Rovers perform in the President's Cup?
And then on top of that, it's been announced that the League of Ireland and Off the Ball have announced a new three-year agreement to increase the number of live and exclusive national radio commentary matches up to 33 across the new season. that new agreement will bring enhanced coverage across the league as I mentioned on all of our other shows right throughout the week as well and off the ball and as well as that we'll be broadcasting fixtures from the 2026 men's and women's FAI Cups just to give you an update as well because You'll want to know which games we're going to be covering. The second week of the season, we'll have Shelburne against Shamrock Rovers. Jonathan Higgins will be commentating on that one.
And then it's myself heading up to Foilside for Derry City against Bohemians. The following week, Jonathan Higgins will be at Daly Mount for Bohemians against Shamrock Rovers. The big, big Dublin derby. And then the week after that, it will be myself at Tala Stadium for Shamrock Rovers against Derry City. So brilliant news. This is where you get the best League of Ireland coverage on Off the Ball. And lads, let's get stuck into it because our first live game this Friday night, I'll be there myself. Shamrock Rovers against Dundalk. And I have to say, I think this is a great, great season opener because we've got the champions Dundalk. against the team promoted from the first division and a team from the first division I think will be coming up with a lot of hope very good young manager at the helm in Ciarán Kilduff but lads let's look at the champions first Shamrock Rovers I think just to start off maybe about Rovers let's have a look at the President's Cup quickly we won't dwell on it too long but
What are the strengths and weaknesses of Shamrock Rovers this season?
Gareth McGlynn, you would have been watching closely as a Derry City man. I kind of looked at their starting team when it came out and I was going, oh my God, this team looks absolutely incredible. I think they could batter Shamrock Rovers. And I think Stephen Bradley might be coming away from that game thinking a 1-0 defeat in a pre-season warm-up. I think he'd be pretty happy with that.
Yeah, and I think that's the way he treated it. He treated it as a pre-season friendly to get some minutes and some legs. I mean, I think they were only in three and a half weeks before that. So I think coming away from the President's Cup, we learned a lot more about Derry City than we did Shamrock Grovers. A lot of young players playing, a lot of players getting minutes, obviously Jack Byrne back as well. I thought it was a good game. I did think that Derry just aged it. But a couple of really pluses. I thought McGovern was excellent for Shamrock Rovers, the little he had done. I think this could be a big season for him.
How is Dundalk preparing for the new season under Ciarán Kilduff?
Obviously, we don't know what's going to happen with Noonan, so he might play a lot more than he expects.
