What are the first‑week padded practice takeaways for the Jaguars defense?
Welcome into Jags AM. It's practice day seven. We're officially in week two of Jaguars training camp at this point. No fans in the house today, but a lot of work going to get done, and they're getting prepped for their mock game that's going to take place tomorrow. So we welcome you in to Jags AM, brought to you by Field Auto Group. I'm Kenani Stephens. Brian Sexton and John Ogier are with me today. Let's get into our big things. We've got a whole week to recap for you. They're brought to you by GEHA, Government Employees Health Association. Big thing number one. The pads went on on Monday, and Jacoby Myers talked a little bit about his philosophy for the offense when the pads go on.
I'm going to just tell the guys, be aggressive first, and then if you've got to pull it back, it's easier to go backwards than to try to go out there, fill it out, get hit in your mouth, and now you think you're about to go hit somebody. It's not going to work like that, so be aggressive first and let them pull you back.
So pads went out on Monday, and I think day one, fair to say, the offense looked a little bit better than the defense. Normally it's the opposite, but that's a good philosophy to have. You never want to go in halving it. You want to go full 100% and then pull back if you have to.
100%. You'd rather deliver the blow than have the blow delivered to you. And the first place that I went, and I was really – gratified to see that Liam Cohen put the pass rush party down in front of the fans right you had the the offensive line against the defensive line and that's to me that's always the most fun part of training camp because we've talked all through the offseason John about waiting till the pads come on to be able to evaluate the big guys and of course we had a story immediately with Anton Harrison and how well he has transitioned from the right side to the left side and Listen, I think that's permanent. They're not necessarily going to say that now. But it's contract year for Anton.
He's motivated. He told me walking off the field after the first day in pads, he liked it. He enjoys being back on the left side. And it's a big move for the Jacks.
Yeah, I didn't have a chance to talk to Jacoby after he spoke, but it sounds like at some point he got knocked on his butt.
How do you learn?
Real quick. So absolutely one of the sort of percolating stories of training camp is what you just talked about. Anton Harrison, it feels like they've been sort of having that move on the back burner for some period of time with Van Lannen out this time. It sounds like they just kind of said, hey, see how you like it. See if it's okay. And now all of a sudden you're, what, four or five days into it. I'm with you. I can't guarantee that he's over there full time, but if he's your best, most talented tackle – if he likes it there, if it's starting to happen. So much has happened since this regime has gotten here organically, where it just feels right. All of a sudden, the move with Anton Harrison to left somehow feels like it's happened organically, and maybe that sticks.
One other guy that stood out, Kai, and I'm sure you saw him too, and it's a story because last year at this time he wasn't on the field. Eric Armstead, really that first day of pass rush party, he dominated. And it was good to see because he's a 12-year guy, and he's going to be important for them to get push in the pocket. So immediately with the pads coming on, practice got a lot more interesting.
Yes, seeing him healthy is also key as well. Our second big thing is going to be bounce back. When we talk about day two of pads, that was certainly a dominant defensive day. And Coach Campanelli said he likes to be honest with his players more than gassing them up too much.
How is Travis Hunter’s return shaping the secondary and pass‑rush outlook?
I just believe in being honest. Even what anybody perceives as a great day isn't all sunshine and rainbows. You've got to tell the truth. You've got to see around corners and see what the problems lying ahead are. It might not get you here, but my college coach, Coach Shiano, used to talk about that all the time.
