What did the hosts say about the Jaguars' tone‑setting joint practice with the Panthers?

Kainani Stevens 0:16
Welcome to Jags and presented by Field Auto Group. I'm Kenani Stevens. Brian Sexton and John Ozier are with me as we're inside today. The Jags are doing a little bit of a walkthrough before their matchup in their second preseason game against the Panthers. But we've got a lot to recap for you after a very eventful joint practice yesterday, and as still some question marks as to whether or not we'll see the starters. Let's start out with our big things today, brought to you by GEHA, Government Employees Health Association. And big thing number one is tone setter unlike in New Orleans where the Jaguars came out a little bit slow. Head coach Liam Cohen said the Jaguars came out ready to roll yesterday against the Panthers.
Liam Coen 0:51
That's kind of what we challenged them with a little bit. Um, you know, to come out and, you know, set a tone and and come out and play fast instead of, all right, we gotta get punched in the mouth and then we respond. So that was uh nice to see us be able to come out and start fast.
Kainani Stevens 1:07
Brian, it wasn't a bad practice in New Orleans, but they did start slow and then kind of build up to it. But they came out fast yesterday and I think that was important for what Liam needed to see out of his team.
Brian Sexton 1:16
Yeah, it it wasn't a bad practice. You're right. It wasn't a good practice either, and that's what Liam wanted to see then. And then they came back and they had a couple of padded practices on Monday and Tuesday, which it says tone setter. I think that's what did it, John. They came out, they were physical, they were tough at the line of scrimmage. I watched the defense. Jeff Logman was watching the offense. We compared notes afterwards, and it sounded like across the board you had a team that had been challenged by their coach to be fundamentally sound and tough and they were and it was good to see.
John Oehser 1:46
Yeah, I don't want to say it was the best practice I've ever seen 'cause I don't know how to quantify that. There you know, you're watching so many different things, you miss things and sure it wasn't perfect. But I thought considering that they really wanted to get something done and that they wanted to have fire energy and they had talked about it all week. When we walked off the set, we had done Jag Z M early in the practice. When we walked out there I'm not sure I've ever been around a practice where you could feel the energy as much and then you kept feeling the energy.

How did the coaches evaluate the Jaguars' physicality and line play during the joint practice?

John Oehser 2:15
Antonio Johnson's knocking guys on their rear end, uh Jalen Husky, uh I was watching the defense, Trayvon Walker's doing the same thing. It it was uh it stood out as a practice where it's one you'll remember and practices, Brian, are sometimes hard to remember.
Brian Sexton 2:32
Yeah, and Kai, we should point out you and I were in a meeting yesterday afternoon where it was said by people who would know that was the best practice the offensive line had all camp long. And again, the offensive line has been a story because of the mixing and matching and moving parts. For that to be said in a joint practice, coming off of the Saints joint practice, I you had to leave yesterday feeling good about where this team is.
Kainani Stevens 2:55
Yes, I think so. Let's go to our second big thing, which is maybe yes, maybe no. After a good practice, um earlier in the week Liam Cohen had said he wanted to see his starters or was trending towards probably playing his starters a bit on Friday, but after practice, joint practice on Wednesday, he said, I'm not so sure yet. Gonna take a look at the film, see where we're at health wise. John, how much of this is a health situation and how much of this is he saw what he needed to see on Wednesday.
John Oehser 3:19
Well both. Um you know I think it's more the latter because I don't think generally speaking he wants to play starters in practice um in in the preseason games. It's not so much a health issue right now, it's just the number one goal of the preseason, the NFL now is to have your guys ready for week one and uh so uh I would be a little surprised or very surprised at this point A if we f Excuse me, if we find out for sure and B, I'd be a little surprised if they play on Friday night, Brian.
