What are the hosts’ main goals for the Jaguars heading into Week 1 of the 2026 season?
Welcome into Jagzam. I'm Penani Stevens, Brian Sexton, John Ozier with me, and we are back for our first episode of the 2026 regular season. Jaguars are gonna play football this week, and we are very, very excited about it. Today's show brought to you by Lowe's. But let's get into our big things brought to you by GEHA, Government Employees Health Association. Big thing number one is finally. We've been here for weeks doing training camp preseason. But Brian, they're gonna play real football on Sunday in week one.
Well, I don't think anybody can wait. You know, last season ended with just such a uh it just felt like a letdown because they've been building, John, for eight weeks, and we saw the offense go from one that was struggling to get its footing to one of the best in the league. We saw a defense that two years ago couldn't get a takeaway, and last year was second in the league with thirty-one. It was building with such great momentum, and then like that, it was over. So I know personally for me I can't recall the last time. that I went from the end of one season to the to the beginning of the next. So looking forward to see where this would be 'cause as all the coaches said, you you don't leave the rock at the top of the hill.
It goes back down and you gotta push it all the way back up and that process starts this week against the Browns.
All right, ready? Put it on, let's go. Football, baby. I mean and It's real. I mean it it is exciting. Everything Brian said is exactly true. I thought the tone was set all off season by Liam Cohen immediately realizing last year's over. They have to get back to the top, all that stuff. I mean, more importantly you never felt a vibe in the building, you never felt a vibe talking to players, that there was a danger of them thinking, well, we did this last year. Um it's a year to year league, but uh I got some more things to say later on in the show about how people perceive this team, the weirdness of it. But uh it's week one. We're ready to go, Kai.
Let's do it. Our second big thing is get ready. Now they had an extra week this year, kind of a bye week of sorts before the regular season starts.
How will the extra pre‑season “bye week” affect players recovering from injuries like Cole Van Lannon and LaQuint Allen?
That makes us all the more excited to actually see them out there. But it gives a little extra time for some of those guys that are banged up right now. So obviously Cole Van Lannon coming off that knee surgery in the off season and John also LaQuint Allen who's been dealing with a soft uh tissue injury helps them get a little bit more ready. You think we'll see either of those guys in week one?
Yeah, I talked to Biselli right before this last weekend and he voiced sort of the opposite of what you just said. He was a he was a player in the nineties, Brian, so he w he was ready to go because once that cut list is gone. So he said, John, it it almost makes me a little nervous to be you know, but the second side of that is it does give a chance to get guys ready. And uh You know, I I think we'll find out about Cole Van Lannon on Wednesday. Uh when he practices or doesn't practice, um, I think that'll be a good indication. It's hard to imagine by him not it him playing if he doesn't practice after all this time.
Absolutely.
I I kinda get the idea I haven't asked about LeQuent specifically. I kinda get the idea that maybe a couple of weeks out, but that's what the injury report on Wednesday's about. Those are my guesses, Brian.
Well and and and I'm with you, especially listen, if you don't practice during the week, it doesn't matter what position you play, you are not up to speed and ready to go on Sunday. And Kai, we're talking about a guy that didn't do any teamwork at all during training camp. So I wouldn't be surprised if he was a guy that was two or three weeks away as well, John, because they've got depth. They can put Walker Little, who really had a good camp. He had an injury in there that slowed him down. It But overall I thought he was very good against the Panthers and the Buccaneers and is a guy that they feel very comfortable with. So there's no need to rush it.
