Welcome to Jackson. I'm kind of Stevens, Brian Sexton and John Osher are with me today as the Jaguars are preparing for their week one matchup against the Cleveland Browns and we're excited to talk regular season football. Let's go over our big things brought to you by GEHA Government Employees Health Association. Big thing number one is expectations. This team overachieved by all means last season going 13 and four and now they're taking on a team that's. Among a rebuild to put it nicely, Brian, and I'm assuming they're going to be big time favorites on Sunday. But how do you go out there? Turn the page. I know Liam Cohen isn't focused on last year, but to get everybody on the same page and focused on game one.
Well, listen, just go back to last year and the division race down the stretch. You cost yourself. in Houston last November and then had to win out every single week because the Texans won out. You won eight, they won nine, you ended up taking the division. That's liable to be how it is this year. Every game is going to matter in a division that has one of the best defenses in football and has the opportunity to compete for the division title. So you ought to expect that every Sunday you better be ready to give your best Because you're not going to have an opportunity with the Texans in the division. And then a very talented AFC. There are a number of teams that will make the wild card race very interesting.
You've got to be your best every Sunday in the CIFC, John.
Yeah, Kai, as you alluded to, the Jags will be favored big. Maybe their biggest spread in an opener season. in almost 20 years. But we all know from experience that really doesn't matter. 23, remember, they went up to the Colts. Everybody thought they were going to blow them out. The Jaguars come off division title. And it was a tight game. Week one is weird in the NFL. If you win and get out of it, you're doing well. I expect this game to be close because week ones usually are. And it could be really weird in the first half. And at halftime, fans go, what's going on? Well, what's going on is there's nothing to game plan for. It's week one stuff. Get out of this one with a W, Kai. And it's the same thing as winning by 14 points.
Win is a win in week one and always. Let's go to our second big thing, which is the offensive line. Now we don't know what the right tackle situation is quite just yet. Maybe at the end of the week we'll have a better idea as Colvin Landon works his way back from that knee injury. But there's some familiar faces on the line. They're just in different spots. Anton Harrison, formerly your right tackle, now your left tackle. Your right guard is now Ezra Cleveland as Emmanuel Pregnon slides in at left guard. Robert Hainsey still holding down things in the middle. Should we expect everything to be perfect week one? Do you think this is a situation where there's a lot of veterans on there or is it all a little bit different because they're in a different spot?
Well, I never expect things to be perfect, so I would say no. They've been trying to get Anton over to the left for a couple of years, waiting for the right opportunity, and it presented itself this offseason when Cole was out. Cole's more comfortable on the right side, make that switch. They certainly feel with Pregnon in there now, it's going to be their best five if Van Lannen is healthy enough to play Sunday. That'll be their best five. With Pregnon being a rookie, will there be some young mistakes? Sure. I expect this line to be just as good, if not better, past pro than last year. And Brian with Pregnon, I think it's going to be a better running team.
Yeah, listen, that's the key metric, especially with the Browns not having Miles Garrett. Right, he's in Los Angeles, so you don't have to worry about who's blocking him on whichever side of the ball. But it was the run game that... It left the Jaguars wanting last year. They were fine the first 10 weeks of the season, but the last six weeks of the season, they averaged just about 90 rushing yards per game.
