All right, welcome into this week's Ozone Podcast with Jaguars senior writer John Ozier, and I'm here in the Hyundai Studios. Uh today's interview. It's a Thursday, uh, so we'll have the interview at the end. Uh Jaguars running back Bashel Tootin, who I'm looking forward to talking to. But first, Jaguars analyst Jeff Logman. This is a good routine now. We're talking about next week's game. Uh, but first, tell me about Bachel. Uh I know you've watched him over the years, he's getting more opportunity now. He's an interesting runner to me, Jeff. He I I'm not sure he's that conventional in some ways, meaning speed, power, uh But there's a lot there.
Yeah, I think there's a there's a lot of skill set. Yeah. And and I think Chad Morton is kind of in the process of molding that. Uh remember now he came from a small school in North Carolina and then transferred to Virginia Tech or should I say NIL money, moved him to Virginia Tech and You had a lot of that, right? Yeah, I got a lot of money in NIL you know, UVA was big big payers, Johnny. And uh he's got a he's got a great tool bag. And and I think the the tool bag you gotta start with the speed, which is you know, four two eight, and that's legitimate speed. He's got the same type of build and power as Maurice Jones drew, which Maurice was a fast guy too. A lot of people don't realize that but he wasn't four two eight, he was in the four four range.
And Chad Morton is d when when I say he's kind of in the middle of molding him, there there is a certain level of patience that running backs have to have to allow things to develop in front of them and and a feel for allowing that to happen. And and you're seeing some of that improvement already this year. He's got a great knack for hitting a hole with great timing, but I think sometimes he comes out of it maybe a little too fast and doesn't need to turn on to that, you know, that overdrive gear until he got it.

Exactly. Uh he also is really good after contact and w is what a lot of the scouts call contact balance, which is the ability to stay on your feet after getting hit. Um so he's an interesting player. And you can really tell the change in confidence from last year to this year because last year there was this overly concern about holding on to the football. Had two hands on it all the time, and the speed didn't show.
Fascinating to watch. It's like you said When it unlocks, which is sorta what it feels like you're getting at, it can really unlock with special because not everybody has this kind of speed.
No, and and Johnny, uh being in the locker room almost on a weekly basis like you are Have you noticed the change in confidence that he has? I mean, you you you have a a young guy who was shy, um a little reserved last year, and now is starting to be a little bit more extrovert. And I think that's all about confidence. And uh it's fun to see. It's fun to watch the growth process happen right in front of your eyes. New England Patriots Sunday, Jim.
Jeff. The way they play I have a lot of respect for it, meaning Mike Vrabel teams and New England teams historically, and this feels like a a New England Patriots DNA team to me, you have to beat them. They do not give you the game, and that's hard to do in the NFL sometimes. It is. What's the key offensively for the Jaguars this week? Because to me, this front seven, I've said it all week. They play like seven Mike Fables to me. They keep coming, you may not know their name. Play hard. But they play hard. Play really hard.
Play really hard. And I think the challenging thing with the Patriots, first of all, their defense has not given up many points at all. I mean, they're and they're good on all three levels. And they have a cornerback and Christian Gonzalez that might be one of the best, if not the best corners in the league. He's elite. And they play a ton of man coverage, which allows them to really fortify that box a little bit to stop the running games.
