And what I care about, what I teach are these skills that allow us to notice that state and then to come back down to a grounded center and show up for the people we care about in a place that we can be proud of.
any practice breath work meditation nervous system protocols can be used to self-regulate away emotion and i think of this as the the self-regulation paradox in that there are certain situations where that is healthy adaptive and useful like if you're in
a boardroom meeting or you're with your kids you might not want to go you might not want to express the emotion in that way so being able to meditate downshift relax is super useful but if you do that over and over again over a period of time it compounds this what i think of as emotional debt where that that emotion it doesn't just go away but it gets like stored somewhere and then comes out later
And so I think it is, it's kind of an important nuance in this nervous system regulation work, because the idea is not to be perfectly regulated like a hundred percent of the time, because there will be things that throw you off.
The long-term goal is feeling safe enough to welcome the emotions as they're arising.
As you mentioned, I know you've had Joe on, he talks about emotional fluidity.
That to me is actually the long-term goal of this.
but going back to your your question of how do i see the nervous system i like to talk about it in terms of three stages or three skills to cultivate the first skill is uh the technical term is interception but it basically means your ability to notice and be curious about your your inner experience so what what sensations are there temperature tightness contraction what are you feeling and for me for a long time
i had no idea like i was just relatively numb and i i compare it to a uh a chef like you can go to culinary school and you can improve your taste palette where you can notice the subtleties of the flavors in wines or foods and it's
The same with like everything down here, like you can tune in and bring your awareness and attention to your body.
And over time, you can build this more refined palette of your internal sensations.
And that's useful because whenever you're approaching a reactive state, there are signals and feedback that your body is giving you.
So there have been studies that have shown that panic attacks don't come out of nowhere.
Like if a dog is around someone, they can predict when a panic attack is going to happen.
And often there are signs coming from the body 30 to 45 minutes before.
And so if you can be attuned to those early kind of warning signs, like canary in a coal mine, you can be like, oh, I'm noticing that I'm getting to the edge of my window of tolerance.
Let me change my environment.
Let me downshift.
Let me let me regulate.
Let me see what's here.
