before it gets to the 10 out of 10, like breathing into a paper bag.
So that's the interception piece.
I'll briefly mention the other two skills that we can go into are self-regulation, of which there are kind of three buckets.
The first bucket is top-down or mind-based, which you mentioned earlier.
Maybe it's meditation, maybe it's cognitive reframes, maybe it's affirmations.
These can be helpful to some degree, but I don't think they're as effective as the bottom-up interventions, which would be things like various forms of breath work, extended exhales, 4-7-8 breathing, humming, long holds, stretches.
all of these change our physiology which shifts our blood chemistry which then sends different signals to our brain and our brain predicts more safety and so the the natural kind of like defense mechanisms the threat response gets down regulated so if the goal is to i just want to feel better and more calm in the moment the bottom-up strategies are just way more effective
And then the third area is, I think it is outside in.
So it's changing your environment, changing the people you're with and co-regulating with a more relaxed, to create a more relaxed nervous system.
So like we're co-regulating right now.
Like my nervous system is reading your cues, reading your facial expressions, that it's taking in the lights, the sound, all of that is making a real-time prediction in my subconscious of how safe I am.
and so by changing your environment from a busy la street into a kind of quiet grounded room that will also have an effect on you as well or maybe it's like hugging your dog or being around your kids like or playing like those things are also very effective self-regulation strategies and then the third one which again we can we can go into more detail is the emotional stability piece and this is is honestly where i think
so much of the work ends up in.
It's also the hardest.
It's basically having courageous curiosity to get curious about and explore and maybe welcome the feelings instead of being like, nope, not gonna do that.
I'm just gonna clench my way through until it goes away.
So yeah, we can go into any of those areas, but that's the journey that I see because without the interception,
self-reg you won't even know when you need to self-regulate and you also won't be able to connect with the sensations which are necessary for feeling the emotions if you're just playing a story like over and over again it the emotion won't complete you actually have to be in touch with the the physical sensations moving through your body for the emotion to move through and reach a point of relief and ease on the other side
Like most people that come into this kind of work, it was through personal suffering.
In my case, I was a startup founder for six years.
