I went through burnout.
That sucked.
It wasn't terrible.
But then a few years later, I was teaching entrepreneurship in London.
And my fiance at the time, her name was Sophie, had bipolar disorder.
And when I was traveling in Portugal, she went back to work.
She was working as a junior doctor.
and she had an anxiety attack because of some feedback she received at work and she cycled home and overdosed on her own medication and ended up taking her own life and that's completely broke me um initially i think there was just a there was like there was a shock there was a like i was in a bit of a haze
But I'd seen adults or older individuals who'd lost someone close to them and they hadn't metabolized that grief.
They clearly hadn't processed it.
And there was this deadness behind their eyes that I saw that...
I was kind of terrified of.
And I was like, I don't want to end up like that.
And so I think partly out of that fear, I was like, okay, I'm going to turn towards this and I'm going to do what I can to feel this.
Because if I don't, it's going to mess me up later.
I took time off work.
I...
did a meditation retreat um but actually one of the things that helped the most was going i went cold water swimming in um in the sea in brighton where we lived and there was something about learning to learning to unclench you know when you get in the cold water and people can imagine this with with a cold shower uh the first moment you get in your body will just like
tie in against the code no i i don't i don't want to do it but as you spend more time in there you can begin to kind of relax and soften and like unclench and like let in the intensity of the cold and it's kind of the same with for me it was the same with grief it was learning to like allow the intensity in
and realize that it won't destroy me it'll destroy parts of my identity it'll the part of my identity that had a a 10-year plan of what our life was going to look like that thought i knew you know all these things um
