Why do we instantly talk ourselves out of things we really want?
Have you ever noticed how quickly you can talk yourself out of something you really want? Maybe it's a class you've always wanted to take. Or a trip that you've been dreaming about. Or a business idea that keeps quietly returning to your mind. Before you've even had a chance to explore it, your mind starts telling you all the reasons why it probably isn't possible. But what if you don't need anyone else's permission to want the life that's calling you? In today's episode, we're exploring what happens when you stop waiting for permission and start listening to yourself instead. Come on in, it's time to choose happy. Wherever you are, whatever kind of day you're having, this is your reminder. You have a choice.
If you're ready to break free from self-doubt and negative thinking, you're in the right place. Hi, I'm Marie, and this is the Choose Happy With Me podcast. Welcome. Hello, welcome back to the Choose Happy With Marie podcast. I am so glad you're here. Lately I've been noticing something. How quickly we can talk ourselves out of the things that we want. Not always the big dreams, but The little ones too. You know. The book that we would love to read if we had the time. Or the afternoon that we'd like to take off, but there's always something to do. Maybe the pottery class that we've thought about signing up for. Or maybe it's the weekend away. Or the walk that we plan to take after dinner, but you know, we have to do the dishes, et cetera.
It can happen in a matter of seconds. When your mind starts saying the following. I don't have time. Maybe next year. It's probably not practical to do this.
What hidden beliefs keep us from honoring our own desires?
I should be grateful for what I already have. And just like that, the desire slips away. And I've been wondering how Why do we do that? Why do we dismiss what we want so quickly? Why do we find it so much easier to support someone else's dream? Instead of our own. Because I don't think it's that we don't want what we want. I think deep down many of us do. The harder part is believing that That we're allowed to want it. That we're allowed to spend time on something simply because it lights us up. It makes us happy. That we're allowed to choose something that no one else asked us to do. That we're allowed to create a life that feels like ours. And maybe that's what this conversation is really about. Not how to figure out what you want.
But whether you've been waiting for permission to Before you've allowed yourself to want it in the first place. Because what if the permission you've been waiting for? It has always been yours to give. You know what I find interesting? Most of us don't wake up one morning and decide that we're going to stop wanting things for ourselves. It actually happens gradually. Life gets busy. Our children need us. Our careers need us. And our aging parents begin needing us more. There are meals to make and Appointments to schedule, bills to pay, groceries to buy,
How does waiting for external permission stop us from pursuing our dreams?
And about a hundred other things asking for our attention every single day. And in the middle of all of that, it's easy to think I'll get to that later. Maybe you've wanted to take a photography class or learn how to paint. Maybe there was a trip that you always imagined taking. Or maybe you dreamed of starting a small business from home. Maybe. Maybe you might have wanted to write a book. Or maybe it wasn't anything that big at all. Maybe you simply wanted an hour to yourself on a Saturday morning with a good book and a delicious cup of coffee. At first telling yourself later and I say and I'm doing that in like quotes At first telling yourself later makes sense. There are seasons in life when the people we love need more of us, and there is something beautiful.
About showing up for them. But here's what I've been wondering. What happens when later becomes years? What happens when postponing what you want becomes so familiar with? that you stop asking yourself what you want altogether. Because I don't think most of us lose our dreams. I think many of us simply we've gotten out of the habit of listening to them. And after a while something interesting begins to happen.
