Why does embracing my weirdness reduce my anxiety?

Devoney Kodad 0:00
Something that I have noticed is the weirder I have gotten The less anxiety I have. Stick with me, okay? Stick with me, stick with me. What I have noticed is that so much of my anxiety in the past would come from moments of me interacting with someone, so having a lovely conversation. And then having this inner urge to say something. To say maybe something super opinionated or to share something or to be more weird or make a weird comment or do the weird thing and I would suppress it. I would tell myself that's weird. They're gonna think you're weird and I would push it down. I would push it down. And so What I have realized over recent years as I have done a lot of work around learning to kind of manage my anxiety more effectively and also just feeling more comfortable and confident in who I am and who God created me to be, which is a freaking weirdo.

Never the cool girl. Wanted to be the cool girl. I'm not. I'm not. The other day I literally texted my friends and I'm just trying to be an adult professional living my life. I take a moment, I'm on break, and I love a golden Kiwi. Okay? I love a golden Kiwi.

What is the internal tension that creates high‑functioning anxiety?

Devoney Kodad 2:25
If you have not had a golden kiwi Please, okay, please. Golden Kiwi and you drizzle honey all over it. Drizzle honey all over it. Alright, so I'm just minding my own business, being an adult, you know, doing therapist things, doing coach things, and go to eat a kiwi. Literally go to take a scoop of it and it splashes honey and kiwi juice all over my entire outfit. I was never built to be a cool girl. I was never built to be like the mysterious calm, you know, one that has it all together. That's not me. Not how God gifted me. So What I learned over time is to more and more Take that filter off. That filter of people are gonna think you're weird. That's not a normal, weird, acceptable, or that's not a normal, acceptable thing to do or say.

How does the “filter” of wanting to be liked block my authentic flow?

Devoney Kodad 3:23
That's not the acceptable thing. People are gonna think you're weird. To take that filter down slowly over time. To take that filter down slowly over time. And what I have learned is that I have much less anxiety because anxiety is created. One of the reasons what I realized for me was it's this tension. It's this internal tension when we are suppressing things, when we're not letting who we are flow out and just be, right? So if we can imagine this stream, this Beautiful stream of who you are, your personality, your ideas, your thoughts. Like I want you to imagine being in that meeting at work. And it's just who you are is this natural stream, right? Of ideas, of thoughts, of right, all these brilliant things that God has gifted you with.
Devoney Kodad 4:22
And what we do when we try to filter ourselves. So that people think that we're normal, so that people like us, so that we're very palatable, easily digestible, we're not rocking the boat, like everyone likes us. When we have that filter on, that is literally building a dam on the stream, a blockage so that who you are and how God wants to move through you is

Why does visualizing a free‑flowing stream illustrate authentic living?

Devoney Kodad 4:52
Біг блокed and обстрек. It is being obstructed. And that I deeply believe causes dis-ease, dis-ease in our bodies. That creates mental health issues, physical health issues, and I I firsthand have lived that. First hand have lived that. When I have that damn up of I want people to like me and I want to come off a certain way. when that dam is up, that filter of how I want people to see me, I am not flowing in the essence of who I actually am.
