Coming up today, we put the tin hat on Ireland's World Cup campaign as they draw nil all with North Macedonia. Bolton Lowell makes his debut alongside James Abankwa for the Boys in Green, who now turn their attention to Euro 2028. And with all 48 teams now confirmed for this summer's tournament, we bring you news of all the sides that have qualified, but Italy miss out once again. But first to events last night at the Aviva Stadium, where Ireland drew nil all with North Macedonia in the friendly that nobody really wanted to play.
Troy Parrott came close to the scoring and hit the post and had the ball in the net twice, but the offside flag denied him on both occasions, although the second one would have counted if VAR was in use. James Abankwa and Bolson Lowell came on for their senior debuts in the second half. Harvey Vale made his first appearance in Dublin after featuring off the bench in Prague. Mark Travers replaced Queeving Kelleher in goal in the second half. Seamus Coleman came off in the second half. That got the biggest cheer of the night. It was his 79th cap. Will it be his last? There were a total of 17 substitutions between the sides in the game. Afterwards, Ben Symes spoke to Hamer Halgrimson, who said it was a strange game.
It was a strange game. First of all, it was just a strange game. Obviously, on the back end of both teams losing out on the chance to go to the World Cup started slowly. They wanted to control the rhythm in the game. They killed the rhythm, played a lot back. didn't attack us, so it was kind of frustrating and difficult to go and press them because they stretched the team so much. Second half for me was much, much better. We grew in the first half, we were better and better in the first half and second half we dominated the game from first minute to the last one.
What was the outcome of Ireland's match against North Macedonia?
I think we had 15 shots at goal, really good chances. We only needed to convert one, but it didn't happen. And that's what happens sometimes. But really pleased with the attitude of the players. They gave everything. They fought. They won the duels. They pressed in the end. And it was just a matter of time when we would score. And, yeah, I think the referees were too happy that this game was over. They didn't give more than seven minutes of extra time. Should have been probably 15 minutes with all the stoppages in the game. But that's it.
What are the implications of Italy missing out on the World Cup?
And now this chapter is closed. and we move on to the next one but I think we now and the players now realise what we can do and now Cheche has won in Denmark in extra time so how close we were is probably closer than many thought I feel like this this team is just a matter of time when we when we win groups and win teams that are much higher than us on the FIFA ranking, I feel like we can play whatever team that comes and at least give them a very hard game.
Boston Lowell impressed in his first cameo in a green jersey. He says it was great to finally get his first senior cap.
Yeah, I'm just happy to finally get it done. Obviously, like you said, playing for every age group and finally making it to the big stage. I'm just grateful and thanks to God for making it happen.
How did Troy Parrott perform during the match?
Just under 40,000 people turned out at Lansdowne Road for the game. Jason Malumby says it's great to have the fans' support.
The Irish fans are unbelievable, honestly. They're incredible and I feel really, really sad for them. The people that made the effort to go over to Prague. Obviously not coming away with the result we wanted. They're unbelievable. To experience big games for Ireland in front of them fans and the travelling fans is unbelievable. They're amazing.
And with assistant coach John O'Shea yet to sign a new deal as part of the coaching team, he says it's a privilege to work and coach with the national team.
Can I ask you on a personal level, obviously Hamer spoke to us the other day about signing the new deal and the excitement of the future and it's something to carry on with you.
