Football on Off the Ball. We just don't have the climate that you can play in the winter. And we just don't have the climate that gets any sort of quality. We don't have the facilities to accommodate that. So it's only right that it would be from two to summer months. Join in the obsession. Subscribe now at offtheball.com forward slash join. The Coy Gig Pod on Off The Ball in association with Cadbury, official snack partner of the Republic of Ireland Women's National Team.
Hello and welcome to the Coy Gig Podcast. Kathleen McNamee here with you to look at what was a very eventful couple of days in the world of women's football between the inaugural Champions Cup happening over in London, a big weekend of action in the WSL when it came to the title race and also the relegation battle between And of course, the closing of the January transfer window, as well as some breaking news over the last couple of days about massive changes to the FA Cup. So a lot to dig our teeth into. And joining me to look at all that is Scarlett Herron. Scarlett, how are you getting on? I'm all good, Kathleen. All good. How are you? I'm all good. How's life up in the Scottish Highlands?
Yeah, I mean, it's cold and the weather is terrible. But, you know, once you get through the January slump, I think things start to get a little bit better. So the days are getting brighter, the days are getting longer. So we're happy out.
Yeah, I was up at seven this morning and it was actually like kind of bright outside and I was like, ooh, this feels too early for this to be happening, but it's nice. I know, what a treat. What a treat to be early at seven. Do you guys get affected much when it comes to the weather for like matches or training and stuff? Because I know like over here with the storm over the last couple of weeks, it's been obviously like the league isn't in action, but there is a lot of like pre-season training happening. And even for the younger cohorts that are trying to get pitch access, it's been difficult.
Yeah, I suppose like when we are training, it gets really windy where we are because we're really high up. So a good few times over the last maybe month or so, we've had to train indoors. But thankfully, we have an indoor facility that we can use. But yeah, it's just like with the wind and with the rain, it just becomes like nearly like a tornado. So it just affects the session so much that there's really just no point in even trying. So to move it inside is a lot easier.
What were the highlights of the inaugural Champions Cup?
And I mean, lucky to be able to do that because I know at home at the minute, like there's Especially from grassroots level, there's a million and one matches being called off at underage level. And I know that's something that the FAA are looking at and there's lots of talk over that, but we won't get into that today. But I know it's annoying when there's, you know, matches being called off left, right and centre.
Yeah, it's definitely one that we're paying attention to. And I think we're going to try and do an episode about it whenever we get a break weekend to properly look at and properly talk. It's something that Off The Ball have been doing quite a few pieces on, but it's been largely on the boys side of things. So we also want to rep the girls, although Tommy Martin was very good talking about them actually a couple of weeks ago on the evening show. So definitely go back and check that one out. But we'll turn our attention to last night and it was transfer deadline day. Not the most exciting of deadline days, I have to say. I was listening to the Guardian women's football podcast on my way in to work this morning and they had recorded it yesterday morning.
So like before the deadline day, but it was quite funny. They were giving off about the fact that the women's one didn't close till 11 and the men's one closed at 7. The journalists were just like, give us a few hours, peace, please. It's such a long day already. But there wasn't really any big movers or shakers on the final day and probably not the same sort of level of transfers over the entire window that we're used to seeing in the WSL as of late.
