Hello everyone and welcome to another episode of the Coigig Pod. My name is Scarlet Heron and today I'm going to be joined by Karen Duggan as we try to steer this ship without our usual host of Kathleen McNamee, but we're going to try our best today. So Karen, how's your weekend been?
Weekend was good. I suppose we had multi-games to try and keep an eye on, which is never easy, but... I think more so than the games was kind of just the talking points that were happening around the season coming to a close that are kind of the really interesting things that were happening over the weekend.
Yeah, I think so. And especially when all the games, obviously it's the last game of the season, so they're all at the same time. It's like, it's impossible to have that many screens going at once.
I think most people in Ireland were kind of looking at Arsenal though, just Katie McCabe's last foray in an Arsenal shirt and everything that came before that. And what's to come next is like really the hot topic for everyone at the moment.
Yeah, I think so. And I think it was fit as well that you could see, obviously, the camera panter after and she's there chatting to Denise. So it was nice that she kind of went out and obviously had her Irish teammate there with her to sort of see her off. But I suppose we'll get into that later. But first of all, we'll quickly touch on the League of Ireland action over the weekend and just the recent sort of talking points. At Lone beat Treaty 1-0 at home and Lissy Wallen at the weekend, Karen. And Lily Ag was in attendance in the stand. I'm not sure if she's there for a holiday, but I've never met anyone in my life who's ever been on a holiday in Athlone before. So there's been speculation that she might be filling that managerial role that's in Athlone at the minute.
So I don't know what you've heard about that.
Yeah, I mean, there was rumblings last week, obviously, that a former international was taking on a role in Athlone. And obviously your mind kind of goes to people who might have some affiliation. with Athlone or with the league. So you're thinking, you know, people who would have played Women's League of Ireland. So when Lily Alex's name was mentioned, it's very left of field. I think her attendance kind of confirms that this is happening. Obviously, it's brilliant to bring a big name to the league, a female coach that people are, you know, they're familiar with her name. We don't know her coaching credentials yet because she's just come out of obviously playing herself. And But it's really just so interesting because to be fair, she has a wonderful squad to work with.
But if this is kind of one of your first forays into management, given how things have gone with the last couple of managers and the unrest that seems to sit, not with the team, but everything behind it, it's a big undertaking for anyone. So she's going to have to come in very strong in her values and know how she wants to steer the ship because it's um can be a bit of a basket case at times but again not the girls on the pitch because they're obviously again doing the business they've gone top of the league just based on goal difference after Galway and Shelburne drew with the weekend um so it's a wonderful squad to come into but is it a wonderful environment that is what I think we're all wondering and how long term is it as well you know
They could do it a bit of a settling period. I think a manager who's willing to stay for a few years.
I know. And you do wonder what the plan is there. Like, will she be down as a player manager? Because I think Like, is it going to be a pathway to her to obviously keep training maybe when she's when she's out as well? Obviously, she'll be out now for probably the best part of a year with the Achilles injury.
