What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Today I want to show you how to replace smoking triggers with pleasurable alternatives. So what can you replace smoking cigarettes with? What can you do in regards to replacement habits? That's what I want to talk about today. And the first replacement habit that I want to share with you is the aromatherapy solution, which means that right now, the smell of cigarettes might or might not be delicious for you.
How can aromatherapy replace the smell of cigarettes?
I mean, I had some clients who actually said that they loved the smell of cigarettes, and some of my clients told me that even though they were smoking, and they were smoking a lot of cigarettes a day, they actually hated the smell of cigarettes. However, I am very confident that you won't hate the smell of lavender or the smell of peppermint or the smell of citrus or the smell of, well, you can insert any amazing smell that you can think of. any incredibly beautiful smell, maybe you want to smell vanilla, maybe you want to smell whatever the heck you want to smell, basically, because you can choose to buy any, well, any little device where you can smell on it, or however that's called in English, those aromatherapy things there, and you can then simply smell this good smell.
when the urge to smoke a cigarette comes up, and you can replace smelling the cigarette while smoking it with smelling the citrus or peppermint or lavender. And whichever smell you choose is of course totally up to you. What you can also do is to replace the feeling of holding the cigarettes in your hand, or to be more specific, to hold the cigarettes between your fingers, which is the way how most people do it, and you replace it with, for example, a stone or a stress ball or a little toy. Or whatever you want to replace it with. You can also, for example, replace it with a pen. And you can also, for example, use a pen as a replacement for cigarettes where you guide the pen towards your mouth and you then put it in your mouth just like you would put a cigarette in your mouth.
And you then, well, you smoke the pen. I mean, you don't light it up, of course. That's not what I mean. Okay, that was maybe a weird way of putting it. You should not smoke the pen. I want to, yeah, I want to make that clear.
What handheld objects can substitute the feeling of holding a cigarette?
But you simply put it in your mouth and you then change your breathing pattern with this pen in your mouth. As if you would put a cigarette in your mouth and you would hold the cigarette in your mouth with your lips. And... This is something that made a lot of my clients realize that they are not actually addicted to the nicotine, or at least not as much as they believed it to be, but instead they're addicted to the change in breathing pattern. And what happens when you, for example, use a pen or any other device that mimics a cigarette, and you change your breathing pattern in the exact same way as you would change it, where you take a deep breath in as if you would smoke a cigarette, This can already lead to more relaxation in your body, to a lowering of your stress hormones, and to less cortisol rushing through your body.
And that's also why cigarettes are so addictive. It's not just because of the nicotine, it's because, and sometimes even primarily, because of the change in breathing pattern. Because when you then change your breathing pattern, That allows you to just let go, to sink into this deep state of relaxation and to immerse yourself into this beautiful feeling of, hey, everything is all right. But without the cigarette, all you do is to change the breathing pattern as if you're smoking a cigarette. And of course, when it comes to redirecting your focus on putting something else in your mouth, you can, for example, also use sugar-free gum. You can use a healthy snack like a carrot. You can, for example, be like Bugs Bunny, at least for a moment.
And this can help you to, yeah, to, in this moment, mimic the feeling of having something in your mouth, or in this case, you actually have something in your mouth, which can then also allow you to, on top of that, mimic the
