And today I want to talk about something that I think every real estate agent team leader entrepreneur needs to hear right now, especially right now.
And that is how do you build a business that still works when the market changes? Because there's one thing we know for sure, the market always changes. The mistake that people make is thinking that whatever market they're in currently is permanent. Like it's just how the market is. And it's not. See a lot of agents get into the business during easy times. Other times they get into a hard times, like we've seen. Think about the agents that got license, call it in like 2020. Low interest rates. Massive appreciation, homes selling themselves, consumers basically forgiving mediocre service because the market. And their desire. to own a home, to buy another home, just covered up mistakes of the the agents. And then suddenly what happened?
Things shifted, right? Rates changed, inventory changed, consumer confidence changed. Lead conversion changed. And a lot of people, their businesses start exposing all the things that they had been able to avoid dealing with when the market was different. So today I want to walk you through the eight ways to market proof your business. These are principles really. Kind of like operating standards. Things that matter to me, I believe, in every single market. Let's dive into those right now. Principle number one is This is actually a quote. Does it make the boat go faster? It's a question. And a quote, does it make the boat go faster? It's one of my favorite questions.
How can the “does it make the boat go faster” question filter every decision?
Does it make the boat go faster? If you've never heard that phrase, it's I came from an Olympic rowing team and I forget what country. The idea is simple. Every decision gets filtered through one question. Does this help us win? Does it move us forward? Does it improve performance? Does it generate more business? Does it create a better client experience? Does it help us be more efficient? Or is this just a distraction? Does the boat does it make the boat go faster? One of the biggest dangers in business, especially real estate, is just confusing activity with progress. Lot of agents are busy all day, right? They're posting, they're tweaking their logos, CRMs, training videos, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
But did you do anything today that actually made the boat go faster? Did you create more opportunity? Did you deepen relationships? Did you sharpen a skill? Did you have meaningful conversations? Did you follow up? Did you ask somebody for the appointment or for this for the signature? Right, the market punishes distraction when things are easy. Distraction can survive. When things get harder. distraction gets exposed. And one of the best habits you can develop is asking this question constantly before a meeting, before you purchase something, before adding a new system. Or hiring someone Does it make the boat go faster? That's to me one of the big one of the greatest competitive advantages in business today that we can have is focus.
Clarity. Because that's what creates momentum. All right, second principle. Double down and narrow your lead generation efforts. One mistake that is so It's just so prevalent. That agents make in a difficult market is that they start trying everything. And I understand why when business slows down, fear kicks in. And fear can create some randomness. Suddenly people are like, Oh, I want to try YouTube or TikTok or cold calls or open houses or mailers or networks, Facebook ads, whatever.
