Buckle up because we're about to take you there right now. All right, I want to share something with you. That hit me this week. Friend of mine. We're having a conversation. And he said something to me about my communication style. And honestly, it kind of stopped me in my tracks.
Kevin Kauffman 0:46
I had to go back and think about it. And it's uh it's the reason I'm recording this podcast. By the way, if you don't know, I'm Kevin. This is the next Seville Agents podcast. And uh just sharing some of my thoughts with you. Anyways, all right, back to my buddy. We're having a conversation. And this is what he said to me. He said, You're direct. You're not passive. But you have a different cadence than I do. You ask questions first. Then you give your opinion. And I think that makes people feel better. I thought, you know what, man? That's it. That's the game. Right there. It's not what you say. It's not even how you say it. So many times it's when you say it. Because most people, especially in our industry that I've noticed, we're trained to be fast.
Kevin Kauffman 1:29
We respond fast. Right. We're quick to respond to new leads. Should be. We're quick to resolve problems, put out fires. We're quick to tell people what what we do. Like we're in real estate. Can I help you? But maybe that's costing us more than it's getting us. Maybe that's costing you influence. And so that's that's what I'm gonna break down today. This is some of these thoughts I've had. So I I think let me tell you what I think Most agents and and most leaders do. People call you, they've got a problem, they start to explain it, and before they even finish the second sentence, You're already thinking, I know exactly what this person should do. And then what do you do? You jump right in, you interrupt, you give the answer, you give them the solution.
Kevin Kauffman 2:13
And in your mind you're being helpful. But here's what's actually happening on the other side of that conversation. Number one is like they don't feel understood. Especially if this is someone that kind of like reports to you or maybe officially or even unofficially reports to you. They're they don't feel understood at best, by the way. They can start to feel managed.

Why does jumping to your opinion first kill your influence?

Kevin Kauffman 2:32
Like you're correcting them. They could even feel judged, even by the way, even when you're right, like in even if you're given the exact right advice. It's still it's still tough, man. And that's I think that's the part that a lot of us miss is like you can be right and still lose. You can lose the relationship. You could lose your influence with this person. You can lose the opportunity to actually lead them. People don't always just follow advice. In fact, they rarely just follow advice. People will follow People who understand them. Say that again. People will follow people who understand them. So I think the real skill is understanding an order of operations, if you will. And it's just the sh here's the shift.
Kevin Kauffman 3:14
It's like it's a pretty simple one. It's not necessarily easy, right? Most people go opinion, explanation, then maybe a question. What I've observed and what I've studied from some of the high level communicators I've learned from, people like my friend Michael Burnoff, my friend Ronnie Doss, or Phil Jones, or so many countless others. The high level communicators go in this order question, curiosity, Understanding. Then an opinion. I'm saying that again, disorder. Questions, curiosity, understanding, then opinions. That's it. That's the difference. And I'll tell you, this shows up everywhere. It'll show up with your clients, it'll show up with your team if you lead a team. It'll show up in your recruiting if you're a recruiter.
