Buckle up because we're about to take you there right now. Hey guys, welcome back to the Next Level Agents podcast. Today is a special episode. My good friend Shaheen in Houston, Texas, is going to be the guest today. This is actually an excerpt from one of our weekly Zooms that Fred and I put on for our EXP group.
Shaheen has grown his real estate team. Both in transaction count and volume, but also by people. He's been really focused on recruiting to his real estate team this year. And so we asked him to come on and share with us. And so what you're gonna hear is an excerpt from him doing that. Fred and I happen to not be on this call. And so our good friend Nollie Williams, who you might hear as well for part of this, is the host. Uh, but what Shaheen shared was just it was so good and so many good golden nuts. Nuggets in there about recruiting and team building that we wanted to share this with everybody here on the podcast. So I hope you enjoy this episode. And uh I'm gonna let the let that roll next. Welcome my friend Shaheen.
So I made a decision. See, my daughter is five daughters four and a daughter is six. So that means we had our kids during the pandemic. My first one was in the heart of the pandemic in 2020. And as you guys remember, 2020 was like balls to the wall. We were showing a hundred homes and five of them would go under contract and terminate and all that kind of stuff, but we all did really well. Well, I hit a wall and I re recognized that I do not want to drive myself into the ground to make money. It was Really, really challenging emotionally. I was working my butt off and it was just high stress. And then having to sacrifice not being around my daughter was really challenging. So I was like, I'm not going to do that.
I have to find out a new way. So five years ago, the end of that year, I've now been at EXP for four years. I had to find a new, a new method. I had to find new mentors. And it's it was it was like you guys. I need people around people at EXP who are open. I found that a lot of other brokerages aren't open to sharing information. So we've fluctuated. We've we've been Five agents, 15 agents, 50 agents. Um, I recognize that I need to figure out how I can build a company that doesn't need me there. So Kevin and Fred have told me this for four years. You need to hire a sales manager. I'm like, no one's good as me. I can't find anybody. Well, I've gone through three iterations and finally I found someone who's fantastic.
Okay, well, you got to hire a TC, you got to hire an ops manager. It's like, okay, well, do I do that first or do I recruit first? Like, do I need agents first or not? So what I recognized was. I needed agents to then give to someone to take over. And so that's what what I did. Fast forward, we got to about 24 agents last year, and we were doing well. I brought our sales manager on and immediately half of them left because now there was accountability and there was someone there to hold to to kind of hold their hand and guide them. And some of these agents didn't want that. So I said, okay, I've gone through if there is ever, if you guys ever see a program online that promises you leads or recruitment or whatever, just please message me first.
Because there's not a program I have not beta tested. And anyone who knows me, one of the questions I ask is, what is the end result going to look like on this? And a lot of times they say, okay, well, if you do this for six months, we expect you to get this. I go, great. What's the cost for that six months? And they'll say, well, six months we expect it'll cost about
