What is the “stupid zone” and why does it trap smart agents?
Welcome to Next Level Agents, the podcast that's all about breaking barriers and building empires. I'm Kevin Kaufman, and together with my crew, bringing you straight up fire. Interviews with top tier agents, game changing thinkers, plus the strategies and mindset shifts to dominate in real estate. Whether it's personal growth, leadership packs, or next level tactics, we've got you covered. So tell me, what does the next level look like for you? Buckle up because we're about to take you there right now. I want to talk to you about something today that If you really hear it. Like really take it to heart. You could save yourself tons of frustration. You can save yourself lost income. And honestly, just avoid bad decisions that you know better than to make.
Cause here's the truth. Some of the worst decisions that you will ever make in your business. in in life for for for that case, does th they're not gonna come from a lack of knowledge. They're gonna come from making a decision in the wrong state, not like geographically the wrong state of mind, the wrong frame of mind. And so that's what I want to unpack today. Because what got me thinking about this was a few years ago. I interviewed a friend of mine. His name is Adam Robinson. He's nothing to do with real estate, but I did interview him here on this podcast. And he introduced a concept to me. That has stuck with me ever since. And he called it The stupid zone. Now let me let me define that like simply in simple terms before we go deeper.
The stupid zone is not about like a lack of intelligence. It's not whether you're smart or not. It's it's about this. See, there are predictable conditions where otherwise Intelligent, capable. High performing people. Will consistently make bad decisions. And Here's the catch. If you don't understand what those conditions are. You're gonna walk right into them over and over again. Thus making really bad decisions. Again, not from a lack of knowledge, but from being in the wrong state. From being in this stupid zone that Adam taught me about. So today what I want to do is I want to break down the seven factors that create the stupid zone. And maybe more importantly, I'll show you how this might show up for you in your business, in your deals, maybe in your recruiting, in your team, in your team growth, in your leadership.
Because I believe once you see this. It's one of those things like you can't unsee it. It it'll become a tool for you rather than something that continues to hurt you. And I don't care who you are. This has hurt you at some point, right? No matter who you are. So let's start there. Let's start with you. This could be a little painful, but just go along with me, okay? Think about a decision you made in the last one to two years. And that decision didn't work out. Don't you think about a big decision you made in the last year or two that just didn't work out. Maybe that was like somebody you hired, they didn't pan out. Maybe it was a deal you forced that fell apart. Listing you lost? partnership that maybe looked right, but it wasn't.
Maybe it was a move you made too quickly. All right, you got it? You got that thought in your mind? Now here's my question for you about that. Were you lacking the knowledge to make a better decision then? Or were you just in the wrong state, the wrong frame of mind when you made the decision? If it's the latter, that that is the stupid zone. That right there, that's what I'm talking about, the stupid zone. All right, so what are the factors? Factor number one.
How does Kevin define the stupid zone in simple terms?
You're outside your circle of competence. This is the this is the first factor. You're doing something that you just don't have the reps in yet. Maybe you've been a great real estate agent, but As a solo o operator, but now you want to build a team. Maybe you've sold a lot of homes before, taken a lot of listings. Now you want to try to recruit. Maybe you've been at one price point, but now you're trying to work your way into luxury. Or maybe into investing. You you get my point.
But sometimes the rules are just different.
