Kathleen McNamee here with you to look back on what was a disappointing night in Grenoble in terms of the result, but also very hard to say that the overall impact experience of this Nations League A run was anything but disappointing considering the fact that we would have chewed your hand off at the start of this qualification period if we were to get some of the results we did and also put in some of the performances that we did across the three various windows. joining me to look back on that last night and also everything that has happened over these games is Karen Duggan and Scarlett Heron guys I know we were hoping this morning would be a bit more of a celebration but as with many of the games in this window we have to say that we
we've turned up happier more mornings than we have sad after games. And we've seen a lot of progress from this team. And, you know, players were rightly disappointed last night. But I think Carla Ward summed it all up best when she said, you know, we've proven a lot in this group and stuff that we didn't think we could have achieved this time last year, or even when the draw was first announced last year. So, Karen, what are your initial thoughts now that you've had probably very limited hours to sleep on it?
Look, I think it's the same as everyone. Like, it would have been great to have had a moment like overcoming the French last night, but it was always a long shot. I think you step back from the campaign as a whole, like you say, very positive. And in terms of achieving things we never thought we'd achieve, I think the most important The most important thing that I saw and the most heartening thing that I saw was how the team handled the pressure of the two Poland games. They were the better team in both of those games. They played the better football. They seemed to be comfortable with the tag of favourites, which is something, again, they're going to have to reproduce when it comes to the playoffs.
And that's especially the second Poland game in the Aviva. There was obviously an outpouring of relief after that game, as opposed to the jubilation we saw after the Netherlands win, because that was job done. And it also felt like we kind of put that Wales experience to bed a little bit with that. Well, that's what I hope we've done going forward into those qualifiers. So we had an expectation coming into the group, which was that we would go to the qualifiers. We've done that. We've done it, I would say, in style.
What were the highlights of Ireland's Nations League campaign?
An extra three points on the board. And better performances. It was night and day, this campaign, compared to when Carla Ward initially came in. We were much, much more negative coming onto the podcast after those League B wins than we have been after any League A loss. So I think that speaks volumes.
Totally agree with you there, Karen, on everything that you've said. It has been a totally different campaign. And Scarlett, I think what we've seen and what we have talked about throughout the games has been the consistency and growth that we've seen now. there's an argument if you were to nitpick a little bit last night that we kind of had a similar start I think to the one that we had in Utrecht where it took us that 45 minutes to get into it and then it was not that it was too late but it was just like we gave ourselves a bit more of a battle to climb and players were a bit more tired But you have to say the French in that opening 15 minutes were brilliant. I was working a shift and everyone was just messaging and being like, this could be a long night.
So even the fact that we were able to bring it back around and, you know, we were able to make those changes. there's potentially an argument that the likes of Abby Larkin and Jesse who could have come in a little bit earlier because they really did inject a little bit of pace for anyone that's listening to this Cara's making faces at everything I say so both good and bad so you can look forward to hearing those once Scarlett has given her two cents
